2018-2019 Sugar Bears Dance Team Auditions

Auditions are scheduled for April 21 & 22, 2018 for the 2018-19 Sugar Bears Dance Team in the East Court of Hammons Student Center. Check-in is at 9:00am on Saturday, April 21. Please arrive stretched and ready to go. We will have a brief photo shoot at the beginning of either semi-finals or finals. Finalists will be posted following tabulation of day 1, and finalists will be invited back on Sunday, April 22. Here is what you need in order to participate in auditions:

  1. Mail all required tryout items to be received by the deadline of Monday, April 2, 2018. Mailing instructions are on the Tryout Application.

    3. Photocopy of health insurance card (front and back)
    4. Current Physical signed by an MD or DO clearing your within the past 6 months to participate in dance team activities
    5. Provide proof of acceptance to Missouri State for Fall 2018 (incoming freshmen and transfer students)
    6. Submit photocopy of Spring 2018 & Fall 2018 schedules & printout of unofficial transcript from My Missouri State (current MSU Students) *If your Fall 2018 registration date doesn't allow you to submit your Fall 2018 schedule by the deadline, please submit it at tryout check-in on April 21.
    7. $50 tryout processing fee (includes both clinics & auditions - fee is non-refundable)
  2.  Attend a clinic on April 8 and or April 15

*A GPA of 2.0 cumulative and semester is required for auditions and to participate in the Spirit Squads.

Here are the details for dancers auditioning for the 2018-19 Sugar Bears Dance Team:

Tryout Clinics will be held in Hammons Student Center in the East Court. Dancer auditioning for the 2018-2019 Sugar Bears Dance Team should submit all of the required forms and items listed above by mail to be received by the deadline of Monday, April 2, 2018. Information for underclassmen that are just attending the clinic and not auditioning is listed below (after the tryout information). It is recommended that you wear jazz shoes, a dance top and dance shorts/pants, and you can bring tennis shoes for the hip hop section. Clinics will consist of a group stretch, learning hip hop and pom choreography that will be evaluated at auditions, across the floor/turns and a question/answer session at the end.

Attire for clinics: sports bra or dance top and dance shorts with jazz shoes is recommended. You can bring tennis shoes with non-marking soles for hip hop choreography.

Parking:  You may park in Lot 25 located just south of Hammons Student Center.

Tryouts for the 2018-2019 Sugar Bears Dance Team are scheduled for April 21 & 22, 2018:

Saturday, April 21 (Semi-finals)

9:00am - check-in/photo shoot (arrive stretched and ready)

Auditions will begin following the photo shoot. Semi-finals will consist of learning a contemporary/jazz routine in front of the judges, and being evaluated on it and the pom choreography from clinics. The tops scores will be posted following semi-finals, and will be invited back as finalists on Sunday.

Sunday, April 22 (Finals)

9:00am - check-in (arrive stretched and ready)

Finals will consist of review/performance of some choreography from semi-finals, evaluation of hip hop choreography from clinics, solo evaluation and interview. The team will be announced online by Tuesday, April 24 at 5pm.

Attire for 2018-19 Auditions: cropped, sleeveless dance top and fitted dance shorts (top & shorts may be any color, but no high waisted shorts & no tights) and jazz shoes. Wear the same dance outfit both days. Warmup pants and tennis shoes may be worn for the hip hop portion of the audition.

Hair & Make up for 2018-19: Wear performance make up both days.  Wear your hair either in a ponytail or pulled back out of your face for Saturday. You will need to be able to do turns and tricks without your hair getting in the way. Semi-finalists should arrive Saturday morning with hair down and styled for a photo shoot. It is also requested that you wear lipstick for the photoshoot that will go with maroon. Your lipcolor and makeup for the auditions should complement your tryout attire (and you). You can wear your hair half up or pinned out of your face for finals, and a ponytail will be permitted any time we are working on turns or tricks.

2018-19 Evaluations: You will learn and be evaluated on new choreography in jazz, as well as the pom and hip hop choreography from the clinics. Finalists will perform a jazz solo routine containing the following elements: center leap, two 8-counts of seconds, a quad or triple pirouette, an element to show your flexibility, and choreography that showcases your showmanship and musicality. The routine should be between 50-60 seconds long. Finalists will also participate in an interview. Finalists will need to provide their solo music on an MP3/iPod/phone. We will have an aux cord with our sound system. Please make sure the song is the first or only song on the playlist.

The 2018-2019 Sugar Bears Dance Team has the following mandatory summer commitments in Springfield:

  • June 8 - MarooNation Ball - Springfield
  • June 6-9 - Calendar Photo Shoot & practices
  • August 16 -19 - Dorm Move-In & Back to School practices and events

Tryout Clinic Information for Underclassmen:

All high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors are welcome to attend the Sugar Bears Audition Clinics for the experience, even though you are not eligible to audition. Here are the requirements for high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors to attend the tryout clinics:

1. Release Form (this is the Release Form for Underclassmen - it must be completed and signed by parent and dancer)

2. Photocopy of health insurance card (front and back)

3. Clinic Fee ($25 - this gets you into one or both clinics - make checks payable to MSU)

*Underclassmen ONLY attending clinics have the option to either mail your Release Form, Photocopy of Health Insurance Card and Clinic Fee to be received by the April 2 deadline, or turn it in at the first clinic you attend. Please note that everyone auditioning is required to submit everything by mail by the April 2 deadline. The mailing address is:  Missouri State University, Attn: Susan Brown-JQH Arena, 901 S.
