He'd never been to the U.S., now he's a president

Junyu Sun has been at the helm of the award-winning Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

When Junyu Sun began his academic career at Missouri State University, he’d never set foot in the United States.

Sun attended Missouri State’s branch campus in Dalian, China, where Missouri State has a partnership and joint campus with Liaoning Normal University. He quickly found his passion in the LNU-MSU College of International Business.

Settling down, finding his path

Sun’s transition to the Missouri State Springfield campus was very similar to many other Chinese students from LNU-MSU.

After being greeted at the airport by the #InternationalBears Welcome Crew, he was supported through the process of finding housing, setting up a cell phone, figuring out where to buy groceries, registering for classes, and learning about on-campus organizations that help international students feel at home on campus.

It was then he was introduced to the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), an organization to help unify Chinese students and scholars, contribute to diversity of campus, and help exchange Chinese and American culture at Missouri State.

Bridging the culture gap with a team-first mindset

"I believe this is just the beginning for CSSA’s bright future.”

Sun joined and eventually became president of CSSA to play a key role in the group’s presence on campus and beyond. He sees one of his roles as president to “bridge the gap between Chinese and American culture on campus with my team.”

CSSA has flourished under Sun’s leadership, receiving three nominations and two wins at the Student Talent and Recognition Awards Ceremony (STAR Awards) for Spring 2017. The group took home awards for Outstanding Collaborative Program and Outstanding Social/Entertainment Program.

Sun was nominated for another award as well, the Outstanding Senior Student.

“Now, our team aims to make each and every activity the best one yet. I’m honored to be nominated for the Outstanding Senior Award this year, but I’m even more excited that CSSA won two awards."
