Love for athletics extends from the stands to the sideline

Cam Deckett cheered on the Bears from the student section, and now he's helping student-athletes stay on the field.

The SuperfanCam Deckett

If you have been to any Missouri State athletics events over the last few years, you’ve probably seen Cam Deckett there.

For a time during his college career, he played an integral role in the student section, often donning a cape and Aviator sunglasses. That enthusiasm helped him earn the Missouri State Fan of the Year award in 2013.

As a high school student-athlete, Cam said he didn’t have much of a chance to be a fan. But that all changed when he came to Missouri State.

“It gave me a chance to cheer on the teams,” he said. “I thought it was an awesome experience, one that I didn’t really have in high school that I could do now. I went to games, made friends there, and cheered on the teams.”

"Going to work with Missouri State teams is quite an honor.”

From the stands to the sidelines

However, there’s more to Cam, an athletic training major who still backs the Bears. That support, though, now comes on the field instead of in the stands. Cam has provided athletic training needs for the men’s soccer and football teams.

“Being a fan of Missouri State, going to work with the specific teams is quite an honor,” Cam said, noting that the camaraderie he built with student-athletes is one of his most favorite parts of the job.

“I’d worked with those guys since the beginning of August, and it’s the end of October,” he said. “Over that time, I got to build relationships with them, get to know them, and really build a heart for these guys and want them to succeed.”
