Using Your Resources

Missouri State University has many resources available to help you be successful in all areas of your life--not just academics! The following is a list of some of these resources:

The Bear CLAW (Center for Learning and Writing), on the first floor of Meyer Library, unites the resources and expertise of the faculty, library personnel, computer and information technology, the Writing Center, subject-area tutoring and supplemental instruction in an environment that fosters informal, collaborative work and social interaction.

The Writing Center is a welcoming place for you to gain advice on any writing assignment regardless of the course or topic. Whether you are just beginning an assignment or are in the final stages of a project, they can help! Undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty use this free academic support service to workshop papers for their academic courses, creative writing, speeches, presentations, course syllabi and articles intended for publication. It is the Writing Center's philosophy that improved writing skills lead to educational and professional success in college and beyond.

The Career Center helps all students, first-year through graduate, as well as alumni. Their mission is to prepare students to make responsible career decisions, and this preparation begins the first year. The Career Center can help you gain self-understanding and explore occupational options. You may want to participate in a career shadowing experience, to observe and interview professionals in their workplace. You also may want to enroll in one of the Career Center's career development courses. These courses are offered each fall and spring semester and provide opportunity for students to interact with others who are also exploring their career paths.

The Career Center can help you with learning how to write résumés and letters, how to conduct an effective and efficient job search, how to create a portfolio, how to research employers and how to interview successfully.

The Academic Advising and Transfer Center is directly responsible for advising Missouri State University undergraduates who are in the process of selecting majors. Advisors support students as they control their own educational choices and make well-informed decisions.

Services offered by the Academic Advising and Transfer Center to the Campus Community include:

  • One-on-one academic advisement for all new, continuing and transfer students with undeclared/exploratory majors.
  • Programs, such as the Majors Fair, to benefit students as they explore majors.

You can request to meet with an academic Success Coach or a Peer Mentor through the Center for Academic Success and Transition. A Success Coach is invested in the success of students. Coaching is a working partnership that focuses on the process of learning to be organized, meet deadlines, prioritize projects, and manage time to reach goals.

Peer Mentoring is a free service available to all undergraduate students who wish to share a problem, need referral information, or just want to talk to an unbiased listener. The role of a Peer Mentor is to discuss problems with students and help them find answers to their questions about MSU.

The Magers Health and Wellness Center is conveniently located near the University bookstore. The medical and professional staff at Magers Health and Wellness Center are dedicated to providing quality health and preventive care at minimum cost to the University community. Magers provides medical services to all members of the University community, ages 6 years and older. Magers Health and Wellness Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA).

The Counseling Center offers special programs and workshops designed to define and/or prevent problems and improve the quality of University life. These Outreach programs are presented for students on a regular basis, as well as by request. These offerings provide cognitive, behavioral and affective information that addresses a broad range of concerns. Topics such as stress management, relationships, test-taking, effective communication, time management, anger management and co-dependency are typically scheduled. Crisis intervention is provided to deal with situations which require immediate attention.

The Learning Diagnostic Clinic provides services and support with care and concern to each individual student. Their collaborative approach helps ensure that students with Learning Disabilities or those otherwise qualified are able to access and participate in the extraordinary array of academics available at Missouri State University.

If you are unsure about disclosing your disability, need evaluations that diagnose a disability or if you need services for an existing disability, the Learning Diagnostic Clinic would appreciate an opportunity to meet with you.
