Bachelor of Arts

Major requirements (39-42 hours)

Major core (18 hours):
  1. Art History core (9 hours): ART 272(3), 273(3); ART 271(3) or 274(3).
  2. Studio Art core (6 hours): 
    1. One foundation course (3 hours): ART 100(3), 101(3), 110(3), 115(3). 
    2. Any studio art course (3 hours).
  3. Art and Theory course (3 hours): ART 492(3).
  4. Public Affairs Capstone Experience will be fulfilled by completion of: ART 492(3).
  5. Minor required (or second major).
  6. Specific Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements
Complete one of the following options:
Art History and Visual Culture option (21 hours):
  1. Core course (3 hours): In addition to the Art History Core courses, complete three additional hours in art history from: ART 271(3) or 274(3).
  2. Art History (18 hours): In consultation with advisor, complete 18 hours in at least five of the following areas of art history:
    1. Area I: ART 471(3), 472(3).
    2. Area II: ART 475(3), 478(3).
    3. Area III: ART 480(3).
    4. Area IV: ART 377(3), 387(3), 483(3).
    5. Area V: ART 485(3), 487(3).
    6. Area VI: ART 486(3).
    7. Area VII: ART 388(3)*, 488(3)*.
    8. Area VIII: ART 476(3), 484(3).

      With advisor’s approval, ART 496(3), Special Topics in Art History, may substitute for a course in one of the areas.

      *ART/MST 388 and ART/MST 488 may not be double-counted between an Art History and Visual Cultural option or Art History minor and a Museum Studies option, minor and/or certificate. In the event that a student is doing both the Art History and Visual Culture option and the Museum Studies option, both the Museum Studies option and the Art History minor, both the Art History minor and the Museum Studies minor, and/or certificate, or both the Art History and Visual Culture option and the Museum Studies minor, these two courses will count only for the Museum Studies option, minor, and/or certificate.
Museum Studies option (22-24 hours):
  1. Museum Studies core courses (9 hours): MST 388(3)*, 488(3)*, 495(3).
  2. Three courses from following, in consultation with advisor (7-9 hours): MST 350(1), 380(3), 381(3), 382(3), 496(3).
  3. Art History (6 hours) in at least two of the following areas:
    1. Area I: ART 471(3), 472(3), 475(3), 478(3).
    2. Area II: ART 377(3), 387(3), 476(3), 480(3), 483(3), 484(3).
    3. Area III: ART 485(3), 486(3). 487(3).

      With advisor’s approval, ART 496(3), Special Topics in Art History, may substitute for a course in one of the areas.

      *ART/MST 388 and ART/MST 488 may not be double-counted between an Art History and Visual Cultural option or Art History minor and a Museum Studies option, minor and/or certificate. In the event that a student is doing both the Art History and Visual Culture option and the Museum Studies option, both the Museum Studies option and the Art History minor, both the Art History minor and the Museum Studies minor, and/or certificate, or both the Art History and Visual Culture option and the Museum Studies minor, these two courses will count only for the Museum Studies option, minor, and/or certificate.
Studio Art option (21 hours):
  1. Foundations (9 hours): In addition to the Studio Art Core courses, complete nine additional hours from: ART 100(3), 101(3), 110(3), 115(3).
  2. Studio Emphasis (9 hours): In addition to the Studio Art Core courses, complete nine additional hours, chosen with approval of advisor, in one of the following studio areas: ceramics, digital arts, drawing, metals/jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture.
  3. Art and Design electives (3 hours): In addition to the core courses, complete three additional hours, chosen with approval of advisor, in art history, design, or studio art. ART 200 cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.
