General Guidelines for Documentation of Disability
Students who request accommodations through the Disability Resource Center (DRC) or the Learning Diagnostic Clinic (LDC) should provide documentation that describes their disability and its likely impact on educational experiences. If no disability documentation exists, students are encouraged to meet with a DRC or LDC staff member to discuss options for assessing potential academic barriers and how it relates to the student’s disability.
The Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) has provided professional guidance regarding disability documentation in higher education. Missouri State utilizes AHEAD’s professional guidance as a framework when using documentation to establish disability and support accommodation requests. Students should be aware that other universities may have different documentation guidelines and that testing agencies (which administer standardized tests such as the GRE and LSAT, etc.) may require different or additional documentation.
Reason or purpose for policy
Documentation of disability provides a valuable tool for understanding how university courses, systems and facilities may present barriers and for planning strategies, including reasonable accommodations, which will facilitate access.
DRC and LDC staff uses documentation to augment information gained through conversations with students, to establish the presence of a disability and, when necessary, to support requested accommodations.
