Alumni (1970-1979)


Barbara E. Garrett (BS in Ed, 1977) received a MA in Music Composition from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1988. In December 2004, she was commissioned to compose a requiem in honor of victims of violence, especially domestic violence. It was performed in October 2005 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Andrew Childs, Missouri State faculty member, was the tenor soloist for this event. The requiem involved 110+ performers, including 23 piece orchestra, 84 voice choir made up of small groups from area high school and adult choirs, the Circuit Riders, an acapella men's group, and 4 soloists including Olga Malinouskaya from Belarus, and Dr. Childs.

Barbara pays the bills by being a legal secretary with Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP, based in Kansas City, Missouri. She is the principal bassoonist with the Independence Symphony in Independence, Missouri. In addition to her requiem, she has written music for two of the Premiers concert series, which she initiated in 2003, and commissioned works for St. Mary's 2004 Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. She is the current Composer-in-Residence for St. Mary's Episcopal Church. (8/06)

Sheila Grisham Pippin (B.A. 1978, M.S. in Music Education, 1988) is the Director of Music at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Springfield. She is a member of MENC, ACDA, Who's Who American Executive Women, Chorister's Guild, and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. (8/05)

Brian K. Poston (BS in Ed, 1975; MS in Ed, 1987) retired after 26 years as a high school/middle school band director. He has taught in Lockwood, Mo., Mountain Grove, Mo., Excelsior Springs, Mo. and North Kansas City High School. (7/02)
