Professional experience

Dr. James Keel Williams currently serves as bassoon faculty at Missouri State University where he teaches applied lessons. Prior to his appointment, he held faculty positions at the Music and Dance Academy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Community Music School at the University of Memphis. He also serves as Third and Contrabassoon with the Springfield Symphony, Second Bassoon with the Springfield Regional Opera, and Second Bassoon with the Kinnor Philharmonic.

As a soloist, Williams has performed concertos with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, the Conservatory of Music in Shanghai, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Symphony Orchestra. A champion for new music, Williams has also commissioned many new works for the bassoon. These endeavors have allowed him to perform at a variety of venues across the country, including multiple national conferences.

Williams holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Memphis’ Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, a Master of Music and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and Dance. His primary teachers include Marita Abner, Dale Clark, Lecolion Washington, and Leyla Zamora.
