Careers and Outcomes

The field of radiography is growing and provides a positive employment outlook in part due to the aging population. More medical conditions, such as breaks and fractures caused by disease and other illnesses, will require imaging to diagnose and treat patients.

Working as a radiologic technician

Radiologic technologists (RTs) provide patient services using imaging modalities as directed by physicians qualified to order and/or perform radiologic procedures. As an RT, you will provide essential patient care, including:

  • Using diagnostic equipment like x-ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment
  • Exercising judgment when performing medical imaging procedures
  • Adhering to the principles of radiation protection for the patient, self and others
  • Recognizing emergency patient conditions and initiating life-saving first aid

Additional duties may include maintaining equipment, processing films, keeping patient records and performing various office tasks. RTs may be required to perform some of these duties at the patient’s bedside or in the operating room.

Career preparation

While there are two track options for the radiography program, the core curriculum remains the same and provides you with the basic knowledge and understanding of radiologic technologies. Graduates of the radiography program will have career opportunities in administration or other roles in settings like:

  • Care centers
  • Hospitals
  • Laboratories
  • Nursing homes
  • Private practices

Preparing you to provide the best patient care

Radiologic technologists (RTs) provide patient services using imaging technology to diagnose and treat patients. RTs usually provide patient care essential to radiologic procedures including protection for the patient, self and others from the effects of radiation technology.

In the radiography program, you will explore curricular areas like:

  • Human structure and function
  • Medical terminology
  • Patient care
  • Professional ethics
  • Radiation biology
  • Radiation protection
  • Radiographic evaluation

This program provides maximum flexibility by allowing you to complete clinical components at any accredited facility. Easy access to CoxHealth and Mercy Regional Health Center offers additional convenience.
