The Assistant Vice President and Director of Admissions (AVPA) leads and manages the Office of Admissions, including High School Relations and Office Operations, Diversity Outreach and Recruitment, Adult Transfer, Evening and Readmit Student Services, and Marketing and Communications. Major responsibilities include the development, design, and implementation of recruitment efforts to support the University’s goals for residential, commuter, adult, transfer, graduate, and international students, as well as the establishment of a diverse student body. The Assistant Vice President/Director of Admissions is responsible for undergraduate admissions policy, supervision of applications processing, and the utilization of financial aid resources to support enrollment goals. The Assistant Vice President, Director of Admissions chairs the university’s recruitment and marketing committee, which coordinates enrollment development efforts campus-wide.


Education: A Master’s degree is required.

Experience: Requires at least five years of experience in a college or university admissions office, with at least three years at either the assistant director or director level. A record of successful outcomes in the development and achievement of enrollment goals is preferred.

Skills: Employee selection, supervision, and decision-making skills are required. Strong verbal and written communications skills are required. Evidence of the ability to work successfully with college and university administrators and high school personnel is required. The ability to understand complex student information systems and to y use those systems effectively in a management capacity are required. Budget management skills, the ability to analyze and interpret statistics and data, and a sensitivity to issues related to recruitment and retention of a diverse student body is required. Requires the ability to perform work with various computer applications. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.


1. Contributes to the successful accomplishment of the University’s enrollment objectives by developing and implementing a comprehensive student recruitment plan for all undergraduate enrollment (including freshmen, transfers, adult learners, etc.) which will include, but not be limited to, the following components: development of an inquiry pool through the use of student search services, outreach (college fairs and high school visits), high school and community college relations, use of the web and emerging technologies, campus visit programs, publications and correspondence.

2. Provides leadership, management, and support for the recruitment efforts of the Office of Admissions, including High School Relations and Office Operations, Diversity Outreach and Recruitment, Adult Transfer, Evening and Readmit Student Services, and Marketing and Communications, develops a competent, productive and effective staff by hiring and supervising, directly and through delegation, the administrative, professional, student and clerical support personnel in those units, and coordinates with academic and other administrative units, such as Graduate and International Admissions, in achieving enrollment objectives.

3. Effectively administers the University’s prospective and admitted student databases by developing a working knowledge of those systems, assessing the systems support needs of the Admissions Office, interpreting those needs to the staff of Computer Services, and working cooperatively with the staff of Computer Services, Institutional Research, Graduate College, International Services, and other offices on campus to ensure that the integrity of the systems and data are maintained and that the systems are utilized productively in support of admission and recruitment functions.

4. Develops data-driven recruitment strategies by effectively utilizing data from a variety of sources to evaluate student characteristics and trends, as well as the University’s market position and competition.

5. Effectively utilizes University resources in accomplishing enrollment objectives by planning, developing, and controlling the departmental budget.

6. Ensures the efficient processing of admission applications by developing and administering policies, procedures, and systems that provide quality admission services for prospective students.

7. Effectively administers the University’s undergraduate admission, transfer of academic credit, and residence for fee purposes policies by supervising and providing leadership to the staff responsible for applying these policies and ensuring that decisions are rendered in accordance with these policies.

8. Adheres to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) rules as communicated by the Associate Director of Athletics, Compliance related to dealings with student-athletes and/or Athletics Department personnel and reports any concerns or possible violations of those guidelines to the immediate supervisor.

9. Represents the Office of Admissions through service on various University committees.

10. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing.

12. Contributes to the overall success of Admissions and Enrollment Management by advising and assisting the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management in all aspects relating to the recruitment and admission of students and by performing all other essential duties as assigned.


The Assistant Vice President and Director of Admissions reports to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and supervises the Associate Director of Admissions and High School Relations and Admissions Counselors (reporting through the Associate Director of Admissions and High School Relations), the Assistant Director of Admissions for Office Operations, the Director of Communications and Marketing, Coordinators of Diversity Outreach and Recruitment, Adult, Transfer, Evening and Readmit Student Services, and clerical and support personnel. The AVPA also coordinates efforts with Graduate and International Admissions.




Factor 1: Professional Knowledge, Skill, and Technical Mastery

Level 5 - 3300 Points: Knowledge of the principles and methods of an administrative, managerial, or professional field such as accounting or auditing, financial management, information technology, business administration, human resources, engineering, law, social sciences, communications, education, or medicine. Knowledge permits employee to supervise projects and/or departments using standard methods to improve administrative and/or line operations. Knowledge also permits employee to plan steps and carry out multi-phase projects requiring problem definition and modified techniques, to coordinate work with others, and to modify methods and procedures to solve a wide variety of problems. Knowledge at this level requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree with substantial related work experience, including up to two years of administrative or supervisory experience. Alternatively, this level may require a professional or clinical degree beyond the Bachelor's degree with moderate related work experience; knowledge requirements include significant levels of related work experience.

Factor 2: Supervisory Responsibility

Level 6 - 1050 Points: General administration of a large unit or multiple units of employees where the nature of the managerial work involves providing general direction for other managerial personnel. Managers at this level have substantial responsibility for the operation of a functional unit, including responsibility for the budgeting process, budgetary and inventory control, purchasing and regulatory compliance, as well as administrative authority over staffing issues and disciplinary outcomes. General administrative work, rather than direct supervision of others, takes up rather large portions of work time.

Factor 3: Interactions with Others

Level 4 - 500 Points: Interactions with others are somewhat unstructured. The purpose may be to influence or motivate others, to obtain information, or to control situations and resolve problems. Interactions may be with individuals or groups of co-workers, students, or the general public, may be moderately unstructured, and may involve persons who hold differing goals and objectives. Individuals at this level often act as a liaison between groups with a focus on solving particular unstructured problems. Interactions at this level require considerable interpersonal skill and the ability to resolve conflict.

Factor 4: Job Controls and Guidelines

Level 3 - 500 Points: The employee operates under general supervision expressed in terms of program goals and objectives, priorities, and deadlines. Administrative supervision is given through statements of overall program or project objectives and available resources. Administrative guidelines are relatively comprehensive and the employee need only to fill in gaps in interpretation and adapt established methods to perform recurring activities. In unforeseen situations, the employee must interpret inadequate or incomplete guidelines, develop plans, and initiate new methods to complete assignments based on those interpretations. Assignments are normally related in function, but the work requires many different processes and methods applied to an established administrative or professional field. Problems are typically the result of unusual circumstances, variations in approach, or incomplete or conflicting data. The employee must interpret and refine methods to complete assignments. Characteristic jobs at this level may involve directing single-purpose programs or performing complex, but precedented, technical or professional work.

Factor 5: Managerial Responsibility

Level 6 - 3400 Points: Work involves primary accountability for key end result areas including the major projects, processes, or services of a cost center. Work activities affect a wide range of professional projects or administrative activities of the University, influence internal or external operations, and affect other administrators and a great many students, faculty, and/or staff. At this level, the incumbent may have primary authority for developing large budgets and distributing funds over a number of related functions.
