GENERAL FUNCTION

The AHEC Health Career Coordinator coordinates the development, planning, implementation, and assessment of AHEC’s Youth Recruitment Program and the AHEC Scholars program. This position works with local schools, hospitals, and state educational and social service agencies to plan and implement health profession recruitment, education, and assistance programs. The AHEC Youth Recruitment Program has aligned with the National Health Science Standards and Health Education DESE GLE’s. The AHEC Scholars is an exclusive club of health professions students representing multiple disciplines wishing to gain knowledge and experience in rural and/or underserved settings. Inter-professional Education (IPE) is a focus of this program, included in the Eight Core Topics in which didactic and community-based or clinical experience is facilitated. This position may also participate in providing services for various AHEC grant-funded projects. This is a grant-funded position; continued employment is contingent on funding.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Bachelor’s degree in education, communication, or a health-related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.

Experience: A minimum of two years’ experience in health care or health education is required. Knowledge of and experience with using social media, such as Facebook and websites, as a marketing tool to reach students is preferred.

Skills:  Effective organizational skills, program/project planning and implementation skills, effective interpersonal communication skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, knowledge of and the ability to use basic office machines, and ability to understand and follow written and/or verbal directions are required.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher is required. Must be detail-oriented and have ability to process and interpret diverse information while working simultaneously on several projects.  Confidentiality is required for sensitive information. The ability to create posters, postcards, flyers, and other recruitment materials as need to advertise events is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Knowledge of health professions training programs preferred.

Other: This position requires regional and statewide travel; some overnight travel is required. May be required to transport students on occasion. A valid driver’s license and automobile insurance as required by the state of Missouri are required. This is a grant funded position and continuation of this position is dependent on ongoing grant funding.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Coordinates the development, planning, implementation, and assessment of AHEC’s Youth Recruitment Program and the AHEC Scholars program.

2. Works with local communities, schools, hospitals, and state educational and social service agencies to plan and implement health profession recruitment programs for high school and undergraduate students in Southwest Missouri.

3. Establishes educational partnerships, identifies interested/promising youth and adults, and organizes and implements transportable workshops to high schools.

4. Provides in-school healthcare career pipeline programming in alignment with the National Health Science Standards and Health Education DESE GLE’s.

5. Implements programmatic planning to develop interdisciplinary learning objectives and action plan for AHEC scholars. Manages post-graduation communication with AHEC scholars.

6. Recruits for the AHEC scholars program targeting minority students and socio-economically disadvantaged students currently enrolled in a two-year health professions degree program or allied health workforce degree program. Determines eligibility of students based on application/grant criteria.

7. Works with AHEC Director to seek and secure training sites for AHEC Scholars located in rural and underserved settings. Training sites shall have the ability to prepare Scholars to deliver effective health services in the SWMO Region upon entering the workforce.

8. Works with AHEC Director to coordinate didactic training for AHEC scholars focused on the eight Core Topic Areas as determined through HRSA.

9. Helps evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment strategies by providing ongoing data collection in the MAHEC student tracking program.

10. Continually monitors and upgrades recruitment activities to accommodate current needs and demands, and identify, explore, and pursue grants related to the support and development of recruitment services for SWMO AHEC in cooperation with MAHEC and other statewide AHEC agencies, with particular attention paid to future self-sufficiency of all activities.

11. Meets grant guidelines and contracts by accomplishing program goals and targets, preparing and maintaining documentation and reports specific to recruitment programs, participants, and goal completion, developing detailed work plans as directed for all recruitment training activities, maintaining all assigned projects and activities within approved operations budget(s), and maintaining files on all activities, programs, and students.

12. Works closely with the Director and other Health Career Coordinator on planning, management, and scheduling of workshops, pipeline activities, health presentations in schools, and meetings with school and/or hospital leadership.

14. Keeps up to date with advances in technology and social media in order to reach high school, undergraduate, and graduate students effectively.

16. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the AHEC Director.

17. Contributes to the overall success of the SWMO AHEC by performing all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Health Career Coordinator, AHEC is supervised by the Director of the SWMO AHEC.
