15 Goals of General Education for Students

The General Education program sets Missouri State graduates apart.  MSU prepares students for a specific jobs and careers; and our focus on Public Affairs prepares students to be responsible citizens.  When you complete your General Education at MSU, you will leave knowing more about 5 key areas:

I.  Intellectual and Practical Skills

You will be able to:

  1. Gather, organize, and evaluate information and ideas
  2. Develop and explore new ideas perspectives and approaches
  3. Express yourself clearly through writing in social, academic, and professional contexts
  4. Listen critically and speak well to all audiences
  5. Reason and solve numerically-based problems, and create and communicate logical arguments based on such evidence
  6. Identify a need for information, then locate and responsibly share the information
  7. Work in collaboration with others to solve problems and make decisions

II. Knowledge of Human Cultures

You will be able to:

  1. Understand principles of human behavior and social interactions in a variety of settings
  2. Develop an understanding of various contexts that shape thoughts and actions of people world-wide

III. Knowledge of the Natural World

You will be able to:

  1. Understand basic concepts of how scientific knowledge is relevant to human affairs
  2. Explore fundamental principles in physical sciences

IV. Public Affairs

You will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of contributing to your own communities and society
  2. Recognize and consider multiple perspectives and cultures
  3. Know your own value system and how it affects your decisions and people and communities around you.

V. Integrative and Applied Learning

You will be able to:

  1. Take everything you have learned and apply it to specific situations in life
