Scholarships for First-Generation Students

George and Martha Bixler First Generation Scholarship

Selection criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a full-time sophomore or greater seeking a major in English. 
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in English Education. 

First priority given to first generation college students that can demonstrate financial need.  If there are no first generation college student applicants, then academic performance can be considered.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Liliana Sanchez Memorial Minority Social Work Scholarship

Value

Scholarship amount varies depending on the availability of funding, but award is usually for $750.

Application

Complete the MSU Annual Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a graduate student seeking a Masters in Social Work (MSW) enrolled in at least 6 hours. Must submit a one page statement outlining commitment to the field of social work and must submit an essay on experience in community volunteerism. Preference given to first generation college students and to MSW students attending the Joplin campus.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Ann Kampeter Endowed Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student properly enrolled at Missouri State University.  The recipient must be in good standing and have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given first to a student who graduated from Helias Catholic High School in Jefferson City, MO. Second preference will be given to a student who has graduated from a high school located in Boone, Cole or Calloway Counties. Third preference will be given to a first generation higher education attendee or other preferences.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Andrew Garton Communication Leadership Scholarship

Selection criteria

This scholarship will be awarded annually to students seeking degrees in the Department of Communication (both Bachelor and Masters Degrees) at Missouri State University. Students must be first-generation higher education attendees. Students should be selected based on demonstrated ability to apply skills they have gained in pursuit of their degree to leadership roles in their extracurricular involvement that help improve the life and future of the campus community. Preference should be given to students with financial need.

Douglas Dent Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

The recipient must be a student (undergraduate or graduate) properly enrolled full time at Missouri State University with a declared major in the College of Business.  They must have a 3.0 minimum GPA, be a United States military veteran or the child of a United States military veteran, and have demonstrated financial need.  They must not be an immediate family member of Douglas Dent (as determined in good faith by the University office of Student Financial Aid).  First preference will be given to applicants who have lost a parent.  Secondary preference will be given to those applicants that are first generation College students and/or have an interest in or passion for golf.

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

John and Janice Catau Family Scholarship

Value

A single scholarship valued at $1,000 or two scholarships valued at $500 will be awarded annually depending on the availability of funding.

Selection criteria

The Recipient of this award will be a(n) undergraduate student properly enrolled as a full-time student at Missouri State University.  Students must have transferred from
another university or community college to Missouri State University,  completed a minimum of 30 or more credit hours, and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Preference will also be given to a first generation higher. education attendee.

Rich and Cindy Miller Scholarship

Selection criteria

Scholarship(s) will be awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students properly enrolled full-time at Missouri State University seeking a degree within the Department of Computer Science. Eligible candidates must be in good academic standing. Demonstrated financial need is preferred as recipients who are first generation college students.

The recipient will hold the scholarship for one academic year. The scholarship may be renewed, but student must reapply. Student must be enrolled full-time both regular semesters (fall, spring) to receive the full award for the academic year, and successfully complete at least one Computer Science course toward their degree each semester.

Clif and Gail Smart First Generation Scholarship

Selection criteria

The recipient of this award will be an undergraduate student properly enrolled at Missouri State University. The recipient will be a first generation higher education attendee, enrolled full-time at Missouri State University.

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

44th Engineering Battalion Memorial Scholarship

Value

A single scholarship valued at $1,000 or two scholarships valued at $500 will be awarded annually.

Application

Complete the MSU Annual Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

The Recipient of this award will be an undergraduate student properly enrolled as a full-time student at Missouri State University and who are currently accepted and/or participating in an ROTC commissioning program. In accordance with the donor's wishes, preference will be given to students who are:
1. First generation higher education attendee.
2. United States citizens.
3. Permanent residents of the United States.
4. Currently serving or have served in some branch of the United States Military Service.

Clarence E. McElroy Endowed Scholarship

Selection criteria

The Recipient of this award will be an undergraduate student properly enrolled at Missouri State University in the College of Business.  The recipient must be in good standing and have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given first to graduates of Central High School in Springfield, MO, then to graduates of any high school in Springfield, MO, and lastly to a first generation higher education attendee.

JMS Charitable Foundation Scholarship

Selection criteria

The recipient of this award will be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at Missouri State University.  Recipients must have at time of application, and maintain, at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Preference will be given to first-generation college students with strong community involvement who have demonstrated financial need.  Each applicant must complete a Community Service and Volunteerism essay as part of the General and Departmental Scholarship Application.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Dr. Wesley and Phyllis Bair Health and Human Services Scholarship

Value

The scholarship is valued at $1,000. The number of scholarships shall be equally distributed between the departments within the College of Health and Human Services.

Application

Complete the MSU Annual Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

The Recipients of this award will be undergraduate or graduate students seeking a degree within the College of Health and Human Services and properly enrolled at Missouri State University. Recipients must be a junior, senior, or graduate with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference given to first generation college students.
