SMART Scholarship for Service Program

Description: The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be employed upon degree completion at a Department of Defense (DoD) research facility.

 
SMART Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who will pursue a degree in one of the following disciplines: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Biosciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Geosciences, Industrial and Systems Engineering (technical tracks), Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, Operations Research (technical tracks), and Physics
 
Dollar Value: The DoD will pay the Scholar’s full tuition and required fees. In addition, Scholars will receive a stipend of $25,000 to $41,000 a year, health insurance, and a book allowance.
 
Number of Scholarships: Approximately 300 SMART Scholarships are awarded annually based upon available funding.
 
Eligibility:
  • Must be U.S. citizens
  • Must be 18 years old at time of award
  • Applicants must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • Fellowships are tenable only at accredited U.S. institutions of higher education
