Sabbatical Applications are due in the Dean’s Office

Soc/Ant Department Presents: a student panel, “Personal Encounters with Islam and Politics in the Middle East: First-hand Experiences of MSU Students.” It is made up of international students and study away students, who will discuss their experiences living through Middle Eastern politics. It will take place Thursday, November 1, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, in Glass Hall 101.

November 3-4

8th Native American Heritage Month: Featuring Singing, Dancing, Contest Dances, Indian Jewelry, Arts and Crafts – Open to the Public.

November 16

Political Science and the Strong Chair for Middle Eastern Studies Presents: Mehmet Gurses from Florida Atlantic University, speaking on "Who's Winning the Conflict in Syria.” The presentation will be at 5:00 pm in Glass 102.

November 17

CHPA Research Forum Presents: Jamie Pamela Rasmussen (CRM), speaking on “The Missouri State Penitentiary: 170 Years Inside the Walls” at 12:30 in STRO 350. Based on her new book, she will use tales of prominent prisoners, including Pretty Boy Floyd, Sonny Liston, and James Earl Ray, to provide intrigue and insight into the institution’s infamous reputation.

Discussion Items:

  1. Fund Raising Priorities for the College: after discussing a variety of items the following have been set as CHPA development priorities:
    a. ROTC Building
    b. Funds for students to participate in Study Away experiences
    c. Funds to assist faculty with foreign travel
    d. Endowed Professorships
    e. Fund to support guest speakers
  2. Leadership changes coming in the next year:
    a. Dalal will be on administrative leave in fall 2013 and will be replaced by an Interim chosen
    from among the ECO faculty – applications are due Monday, October 29th.
    b. Sailors will complete her term as Head of PHI and will be replaced by a Director chosen from
    among the PHI faculty – applications are due Wednesday, October 31st.
    c. Connor has agreed to be considered for a second term as PLS Head. Dean will request
    feedback from the PLS faculty.
  3. General Education course proposals: the Heads are encouraged to attend one of the GE Workshops being presented by CGEIP and to assist their faculty with course proposals.
  4. Summer and fall 2013 course schedules were discussed and it was noted that Intersession proposals are due no later than Monday, October 29th.
