Welcome to the College of Humanities and Public Affairs at Missouri State University
Humanities and Public Affairs is one of the seven academic colleges at Missouri State University and we serve over 1300 majors in eight departments. Our 100 full-time faculty members teach a sizeable number of courses in the University’s general education curriculum, and we offer programs leading to sixteen baccalaureate degrees and eight Master’s degrees.
Most of the units in the College are housed in beautiful Strong Hall – the newest classroom building on campus. All classrooms in Strong Hall are equipped with the latest instructional technology, and a very positive learning environment is provided to students. One department – the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies – is housed in the Washington, D.C. area in order to take advantage of the teaching and research opportunities in national defense and diplomacy that are available only in our nation’s capital.
In keeping with the University’s public affairs mission, all students at Missouri StateUniversity are encouraged to become civically engaged. As a result, all programs in the College help to prepare students for the duties and responsibilities of citizenship and ethical leadership as they participate intelligently in public life, as well as pursue successful and satisfying careers in their chosen fields. Classes in the disciplines found in CHPA also promote a better understanding of the world through cultural competence and our students are also encouraged to participate in Education Abroad opportunities in order to experience other cultures first hand.
The faculty of the College of Humanities and Public Affairs is among the finest in the University. We have many outstanding and award winning teachers, as well as a number of scholars with national or international reputations for their research expertise. All are involved in various forms of service to their campus, community, and disciplines. See our CHPA College Blog.
I invite you to browse our web site and learn more about the departments and research center that make up our College. As you will find in the links placed on the left side of this web page our College houses the traditional humanities and social science departments as well as a number of interdisciplinary Area Studies Programs. In addition, the Center for Archaeological Research operates as part of our mission, expanding opportunities for students to participate in applied research projects or to experience archaeological excavation and cultural preservation techniques.
This is an exciting time on our campus for students, as well as faculty and staff under the leadership of university President,Clif Smart. It is the goal of the College to continue to focus on producing educated persons and to benefit the state of Missouri and the larger society. I certainly am proud to be the Dean of this College and an alumnus of this university.
