PEU Codes

Process for reviewing professional education coursework from Missouri community colleges with DESE-Approved programs

Determinations of transfer credit based on Missouri Standards for Teacher Education Programs (MOStep) competencies found in DESE-approved courses from Missouri community colleges are made by the College of Education through a comparison of course descriptions, syllabi, and other pertinent documentation.

The initial step in the review process is to have individual course equivalencies established by Missouri State academic departments. If the academic department does not give a direct equivalency, but the College of Education decides that substantial similarity exists between a course taken at the community college with the DESE approved education program and an Missouri State course with respect to MoSTEP competencies, a "PEU" code will be assigned to that community college course and used to substitute for the Missouri State course in a given undergraduate education degree program. If substantial similarity does not exist, but the course is in a subject matter taught at Missouri State under a specific course prefix, elective credit will be awarded under that prefix (e.g., MTH electives for a mathematics course).

The "PEU" code will represent lower-division courses taken at two-year colleges. Students whose evaluation show PEU courses and who change from or were never a BSED major and want to and receive lower division departmental credit may go to the Missouri State Office of Admissions for re-evaluation.

Students that want to receive upper division elective credit must go to the head of the Missouri State department through which each similar course is offered. When making an appeal, students must be prepared to provide supporting documentation (e.g., a course syllabus, course description from the other institution's catalog, examples of work). Department heads who wish to approve a revision to a student's transfer credit evaluation must submit a "Change/Pre-approval of Transfer Credit Evaluation" form to the Admissions Office.

Missouri State has a transfer course equivalency website. Course equivalencies for most Missouri and many out-of-state institutions are included.

Current Missouri State students who plan to take courses at other institutions are encouraged to consult with their advisors and to confirm transferability of such courses prior to enrolling.

Appeal of transferability or course equivalencies

The ultimate authority for transfer of credit for the set of DESE – Approved Community College courses rests with the College of Education at Missouri State. Students who wish to appeal the evaluation or transferability of a course may do so through the Missouri State College of Education within the Education Advisement Center, Hill Hall Room 202.When making an appeal, students must be prepared to provide supporting documentation (e.g., a course syllabus, course description from the other institution's catalog, examples of work). Approval of a revision to a student's transfer credit evaluation must include a "Change/Pre-approval of Transfer Credit Evaluation" form submitted to the Admissions Office.
