Equipment and Services Offered by CAR

Working closely with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private engineering firms and individuals, CAR offers a wide range of services that fall under the heading of cultural resources management. Projects undertaken by CAR consist of all phases of archaeological and historical investigations, including document searches, literature reviews, reconnaissance and intensive surveys, test excavations, mitigative or intensive excavations, monitoring, site preservation, and architectural surveys. We also offer specialized analysis of botanical remains through subcontracts.

Major agencies for which CAR works include the U.S. Forest Service, the Missouri Department of Transportation, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Little Rock, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Rock Island Districts). CAR has also undertaken investigations for numerous engineering and consulting firms over the years in conjunction with various federal and state agencies in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, and Arkansas. In addition, CAR projects have been sponsored by private individuals as well as small businesses.

 CAR has a variety of equipment and resources for undertaking field investigations, analyzing data, and preparing reports:

Field Equipment

  • Two 4WD vehicles (Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe) as well as access to the Missouri State motor pool
  • Two Sokkia total stations with data recorders
  • Geometrics G-858 MagMapper Magnetometer/Gradiometer
  • Trimble Geo XH field computer with external antenna
  • Two Garmin handheld GPS units
  • 35 mm and digital cameras (Nikon D-90 DSLR)
  • Excavation equipment (shovels, screens, etc.)

Laboratory Analysis

  • Olympus SZX12 and two other microscopes
  • Digital and analog balances
  • GIS and CAD programs for mapping and drawing preparation
  • Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and other programs for data management and analysis

Report Preparation and Production

  • Microsoft Word and Adobe FrameMaker for report assembly
  • Adobe Photoshop for image editing
  • Adobe Acrobat for PDF production
