Facilities and Resources

The Biomedical Sciences Department is housed in the Professional Building. All facilities are located in the Professional Building including laboratories, equipment, and classrooms. Students are encouraged to participate in research not only in class, but also on their own. Laboratories and research equipment give students a place to implement what they have learned in a classroom setting using hands-on experiments. A unique characteristic of the department is that clinical work is required and encouraged. Some learning may take place off campus.

Teaching Laboratories

Our cell biology laboratory includes a space for research and a prep room. This lab is equipped for 20 students to carry out techniques such as histological and immunofluorescent staining of cells, SDS-PAGE, and western blot analysis.

The molecular biology laboratory can accommodate 20 students and is set up for molecular biology, molecular genetics, virology, and recombinant DNA testing. This laboratory includes a wet lab area where samples can be prepped for analysis by microscopy. Other equipment available in this laboratory are a spectrophotometer, UV transilluminator, and a PCR thermocycler. Small equipment is also available for student use for testing and research.

A student computer laboratory houses 15 student-use computers connected to the internet and is specifically set-up for use by Cell and Molecular Biology program students. These computers are equipped with standard issue university software that includes the Microsoft Office Suite. A scanner and laser printer are also available for student use.

Teaching and research support laboratories

The tissue culture facilities are used as a common area and teaching facility. Equipment in this laboratory includes two laminar flow hoods for tissue culture maintenance, two CO2 incubators used for mammalian cell culture, an inverted phase contrast microscope for observing cell cultures, and a liquid nitrogen dewar for long term storage of cells.

Our Animal Vivarium, located in the Professional Building, Rooms 368 and 364, includes a standard animal facility for small animal housing and handling. This facility, approved by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), has two full capacity rooms for 240 cages and provide the flexibility to house both mice and rats for potential research and teaching purposes.

A common equipment room is available for your use as a student researcher. Equipment in this room includes three -80° Celsius freezers and three centrifuges (clinical, mid-speed, and ultra). Other instruments includes pH meters and electronic balances.

General research laboratories

There are several faculty research laboratories where undergraduate students have active and ongoing research projects taking place. Each contains specific equipment required for each research program. This equipment is shared and available to all faculty.

Major Equipment

Microscopy suite houses a number of microscopes for student use in research projects and biomedical course activities. Microscopes available in this research suite include:

  • Olympus BX60 system microscope
  • Olympus IX81 system microscope
  • Olympus IX70 system microscope

Biomolecular and nanomaterials characterization research takes place in several laboratories in the Professional Building common equipment laboratory, small equipment laboratory, and/or Dr. Smith's research laboratory. There are several key pieces of equipment available in these laboratories for biomolecular and nanomaterials characterization.

Other supporting equipment

On the first floor of Temple Hall an Electron Microscopy Laboratory (EML) is available for student use. The EML is a resource asset of the Biomedical Sciences Department, but is operated as an institutional resource center to meet the electron microscopy needs of faculty and students throughout the University. The laboratory provides support services in the preparation of samples for the scanning electron microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and the examination of specimens for SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis.


Professional Building, Room 417-houses a computer lab and workroom for dietetics students. This area is open every weekday. The computers have necessary nutrition software and tutorials to assist students in completing their course work.

Body composition laboratory

Professional Building, Room 419 houses the department’s new Lunar iDXA, BodPod machine, and metabolic cart. Students can utilize these during in-class activities or when conducting research. Supervision by a certified faculty member is required.

Anesthesia Simulation Suite

Missouri State School of Anesthesia incorporates a state of the art Simulation Suite into the clinical phase of the program. The HPS anesthesia Meti-man is an anesthesia simulator that provides a useful tool of clinical simulation to assist students to anticipate the physiological effects of interventions while enhancing critical thinking and decision making skills in patient care. It is a tool useful to improve patient safety and decrease human error. It is the only simulator available with the ability to provide respiratory gas exchange, anesthesia delivery and patient monitoring with real physiological clinical monitors.

Operating Room Theater

The operating room theater houses the simulator and has the look and feel of a real OR suite. A viewing room and control room allow for instruction and for students to assess their performance.
