University Exit Examination (1993-present)

The purpose of this examination is to evaluate the general academic knowledge and skills of the students receiving a baccalaureate degree at Missouri State University, to assess the outcomes of our academic programs, and to improve the quality of instruction and learning at this institution. Since 1992, the university has used an assessment tool developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to address this purpose. Though the name of the assessment has changed from the Academic Profile to the Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP) and currently to the ETS ® Proficiency Profile, the content of the assessment has not changed, and therefore, student scores from 1992 to the present can be compared.

When administering the ETS® Proficiency Profile, institutions have an opportunity to acquire additional information from students. Missouri State University asks seniors a variety of locally developed questions regarding their plans immediately following graduation and their level of satisfaction with the quality of instruction they received at the university. In addition, an abbreviated and validated version of the Public Affairs Scale, which was developed to measure students' integration of the three themes of the Missouri State University mission in public affairs, is included.

All undergraduate students at Missouri State University who have successfully passed 90 or more credit hours must complete the University Exit Examination prior to graduation. During fiscal year 2012, the University tested a total of 2,929 graduating seniors which represented 95% of undergraduate degree recipients in that year.

Major Field Tests by ETS

The Educational Testing Service offers a variety of discipline-specific assessment tools designed to evaluate student mastery within those disciplines. Since 1990, Missouri State University has offered ETS Major Field Tests to undergraduate students in the areas of biology, business, chemistry, computer science, English literature, history (discontinued by ETS in 2009), mathematics, music, physics, political science, psychology, and criminal justice. In addition, a Major Field Test is offered for students in the MBA program.

Area of Concentration Achievement Tests (ACAT 2001-present)

These discipline-specific tests have been administered to students in the areas of agriculture, biology, geology, and social work at Missouri State University since 2001.


The Praxis test by ETS is used by many states to measure teacher candidates' knowledge and skills as part of the teacher licensure and certification process. Missouri State University students pass the Praxis exam as a requirement for student teaching and certification in Missouri.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012)

Missouri State University administers the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) on a three-year rotational basis as of 2009. A web based version of the NSSE was administered in the Spring 2012 term to a random sample of first-year and senior students at Missouri State University. Respondents included 324 first-year students (out of 2,426) and 753 seniors (out of 4,090) for an overall response rate of 17%.

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE 2008, 2011)

Missouri State University administered a web based version of the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) in the summer of 2011 to a sample of SOAR students. Altogether, 590 of the 2,425 SOAR students participated in the BCSSE for an overall response rate of 24%. Of those students who took the BCSSE, 119 also participated in the spring 2012 NSSE (see above) to provide longitudinal data to the University.

Graduate Student Survey (1995-present)

A locally developed survey distributed to exiting graduate students that is designed to gauge their views of the Graduate College, their degree program, and their individual development. The results of this survey are used to assist faculty and administration in tailoring graduate programs to better serve student needs.

Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP 1997-2006) Student Information Survey

Historically, the CIRP survey was conducted at Missouri State University during the fall semester every year from 1997 to 2006. This survey provided helpful information to assist faculty and administration to design and deliver education.

Citizenship and Civic Issues Survey (1997-2005)

The survey included freshmen and seniors who participated in the CIRP Student Information Survey and the College Student survey produced by UCLA. The Citizenship and Civic Issues Questionnaire contained fifteen locally developed questions related to the University Public Affairs mission.

Missouri State University Employer Survey (1993-present)

A locally developed survey designed to evaluate the general links between higher education and external employers who hire college graduates. More specifically, the survey is used to determine if Missouri State University is being responsible to the educational needs related to employment for both their students and external constituencies. This survey also enables the university to assess the quality of the Missouri State University Career Planning and Placement Office and Office of Cooperative Education. This survey is further used as a performance indicator to determine the progress of Missouri State University in meeting goals outlined in past, current, and future long-range plans for college and departmental assessments.

Student Academic Integrity Survey (2003, 2007, 2009)

A survey initiated by the Center for Assessment and Instructional Support and continued by the Academic Integrity Council to assess and track the University climate of academic integrity as a step in promoting academic honesty on the campus. The survey was developed by Dr. Donald McCabe under the auspices of the Center for Academic Integrity at Duke University with support from the Templeton Foundation.

Faculty Academic Integrity Survey (2003)

The survey was conducted by the Center in parallel with the Student Academic Integrity Survey in 2003 to collect the perceptions of faculty teaching that cohort of students.

National Survey of America’s College Students (NSACS 2003)

The large-scale national survey administered a background survey and the National Assessment of Adult Literacy cognitive assessment to 30 degree-seeking students with enough credits in fall 2002 to be able to graduate in spring 2003. The survey was administered by the American Institutes for Research on the University campus. The national data provided educators and employers with a picture of the skills of the emerging labor force.

Assessment of Basic Skills for Student Placement (1987-present)

Beginning in 1987, this entrance level testing in writing and mathematics has helped identify the proper placement of newly admitted students into introductory writing and mathematics courses..

  • Writing Assessment for Placement. The Department of English historically evaluated diagnostic essays written by every entering student. English faculty evaluated the essays to determine the ability level of students and the appropriate course for each student. Beginning in 2005 and continuing to the present, placement in writing courses is based on the ACT English score or the SAT verbal score.
  • Mathematics Assessment for Placement. Historically all entering students took a mathematics examination. Two levels of testing provided an evaluation of student ability before students enrolled in mathematics courses. One test evaluated general mathematics and algebra skills. The other test indicated the level of preparation relative to the entrance skills needed in calculus or trigonometry courses. Beginning in 2006 and continuing to the present, placement in mathematics is based on the ACT or SAT mathematics scores.
Portfolio Assessment of English 110 (2002)

A team of English faculty reviewed a portfolio containing placement essays and samples from writing classes to assess students’ achievement in writing. The writing samples were from required assignments in 22 sections of ENG 110 including approximately 450 students. A report provided recommendations for improving teaching and learning relative to writing and was distributed to faculty members who have opportunities to assist students with their writing.

General Education Survey (1998-2000)

A survey consisting of locally developed questions used to measure pre- and post-general education progress. The general education program at Missouri State University is the portion of curriculum that addresses the knowledge, skills, habits, and dispositions of educated persons. Results of this survey has enabled Missouri State University faculty and administration to incorporate more efficient ways of developing people capable of making thoughtful choices that lead to creative and productive lives and to responsible participation in society
