WLC Diversity policy statement

The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WLC) is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture that values the inclusion of diversity through the core value of inclusive excellence. The collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, inventiveness, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities, and talent that our community invests in their work represents a significant part of not only our culture, but our reputation and university achievements as well.

  • Our human capital is one of our most valuable resources. WLC is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture that respects and values the inclusion of our diversity.
  • We embrace & encourage our communities’ differences that are identified based on accent, age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our department unique.
  • We acknowledge that too often the study of Classical languages has been used to maintain the status-quo of promoting racism and other forms of systemic oppression.
  • We strive to eliminate appropriations of Classical languages and to illuminate the truth about diversity in the ancient world. We will hold ourselves accountable to our WLC Diversity Commitments (listed below).

WLC Diversity commitments

The World Languages and Cultures Department is committed to the following commitments. Our main goal is to ensure an anti-racist environment, free of bias, implicit bias, racism, hatred, xenophobia, homophobia, anti-Semitism and bigotry in our classrooms and courses. The WLC faculty commits to address and act against any such inappropriate behaviors. We will strive to:

  1. Educate ourselves on how to incorporate discussions of diversity, equity, and inclusion such as race and ethnicity in our personal research, our teaching, and our disciplines across the US and our discipline.
  2. Update our existing courses, and develop new courses, that also emphasize diversity, equity, and inclusion as they pertain to our fields of study and disciplines.
  3. Integrate lessons about how to discuss diversity, equative and inclusive perspectives with respect to our language, literature, and culture courses. We commit to update textbooks and course materials to reflect these viewpoints.
  4. Implement a department-wide syllabus statement in which we outline resources for underrepresented students and faculty as well as establish guidelines for respectful behavior in the classroom.
  5. Promote scholarships and support to Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and other groups that represent diversity scholars in our fields/disciplines, our courses, and research as well as advocate for others in our disciplines to engage through individual and collaborative efforts. 
  6. Foster scholarship opportunities for underrepresented students, and work in conjunction with the Education Abroad Office to develop specific scholarships for BIPOC students.
  7. Diversify our invited speakers by working together with individuals in other departments to create a more welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community for students, faculty, and staff.
  8. Organize, participate, and engage in events focused on awareness, knowledge, and skill development associated with issues of diversity as established in the University’s Long-Range Plan, annual action plans and the core value of inclusive excellence. This includes activities organized by other University divisions, departments, and units as well as general community partnership organizations.

As a department, we are committed to the above core standards for our faculty, students, and staff. We strive to make our department an inclusive and welcoming place for all where diversity, equity and inclusion are promoted, enforced, celebrated, and valued. As an educational institution, we aim to demonstrate a community for all members based on respect, justice, collegiality, and professionalism.
