National Counselor's Exam

Test Dates and Locations

This exam is transitioning from paper-based to computer-based.  Candidates who are Missouri State students will be submitted for approval to NCE.  Once NCE has approved the list, candidates will receive an email notification with instructions as to the next steps.  Approximately one month prior to the October exam window, candidates will receive another email with information regarding how to set up an account and choose their exam date, time, and location. The exam window for 2017 will be from October 14 to November 14.  Candidates should check their spam/junk/clutter folders if they have not received their email notification from Pearson VUE by approximately September 15, and if the notification is not there, contact NCE at certification@nbcc.org.

Registration

Registration for the National Counselor's Exam is conducted entirely through the instructions provided in the email candidates receive from NCE.  Candidates are referred to Pearson VUE for registration and payment; candidates with a previous account through Pearson VUE for another exam (such as the CPCE) will need to create a NEW account.  It is important that the candidate's first and last name in the ProCounselor account is identifical to the name on the two forms of identification they will be using when they report for the exam.  If changes need to be made, please contact the Certification Department BEFORE September 21, 2017.  Once the candidate's information has been sent to Pearson VUE, no changes can be made to the candidate's mailing address, e-mail address, or phone number in their ProCounselor account.

Candidates can check for testing locations in their vicinity by going to the Pearson VUE website and typing NBCC into the Select Your Program box. After selecting the National Board for Certified Counselors, click on Find a Test Center to see which centers are administering the NCE.  Please consult the Exam Registration Instructions for step-by-step instructions on how to register correctly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: for the October 14, 2017 to November 14, 2017 exam window, exams will be administered through the "standard" Pearson VUE testing program.  All exam registration and scheduling will be conducted through Pearson VUE, which means candidates will reserve a specific date and time as they register and pay for the exam.  As of the April 2018 exam administration, the exam will be administered through Anywhere Proctored, and the procedures below will apply.

As of April 2018: These exams are administered through Pearson VUE's Anywhere Proctored service.  Although your confirmation email from Pearson VUE indicates you need to contact us for an appointment, we administer these exams on a "walk in" basis.  This means you do not have to make an appointment for your exam, but can walk in any time during the exam window.  This is what you need to do:

  • Check our main webpage for our operating hours.
  • Plan to arrive NO LATER THAN four hours prior to our closing time.
  • Bring a valid (non-expired) government-issued photo ID - your school ID is not sufficient.
  • Bring a printed copy of your exam confirmation.
  • You will be required to adhere to all Testing Center policies and procedures, including checking any personal belongings into secure storage.

Test Results

Visit the NCE website to read about how to obtain your test results.  Preliminary score reports will be printed at the time of exam.

Accommodations

Contact the testing company to request accommodations.  If the candidate has requested special examination accommodations, correspondence regarding the specifics of those arrangements will come from the NCE affiliate, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).  Questions about exam accommodations should be directed to accomodations@cce-global.org.
