This skateboarder found direction and growth

When Caileb Newby started his journey at Missouri State, he was a transfer student with an associate’s degree, working three jobs and going to school.

Only a few semesters in, he received MSU scholarships for students in his areas of study.

“It’s definitely had a lot of impact. Up until then, I hadn’t done anything but just go to class and work. Now, I’m involved in several groups on campus.”

He is connecting with his fellow classmates, and is finding that the College of Business is a close-knit environment.

“The College of Business definitely offers a lot of preparation for students, from résumé building to mock interviews to having a career fair so you can meet potential employers.”

Getting involved and inspired

"I have been growing professionally and discovering my strengths.”

Newby has also had the opportunity to network with professionals in the insurance field and travel across the nation. For example, Gamma Iota Sigma goes on a trip each semester.

“We went to Columbus, Ohio, for an international conference. There were job fairs, and some corporate offices are in that city, too, so I interviewed with a few companies. Seeing successful professionals out there really inspires me.”

He also gives back, participating in campus service projects set up by the business fraternities.

Skating into new situations

Newby has an interesting hobby for someone studying risk management: skateboarding.

“I’ve been skating for 14 years. You could say it’s high-risk! Maybe I’ll be able to sell my skating buddies insurance down the road.”

He thinks he’s changed a lot since starting college.

“I wasn’t necessarily shy then, but now I’m definitely more comfortable in new situations, being in a suit, talking to potential employers and speaking in public."
