How her plan to study in the U.S. for a year turned into a second master's degree

Qingdao University transfer student Yuxin Zhao has displayed her love for music with the MSU and Springfield symphony orchestras.

Missouri State’s partnership with Qingdao University first led Yuxin Zhao to Missouri State University.

A plan to spend a year studying in the U.S. became the path to a second master’s degree after she fell in love with Missouri State University and Springfield, Mo.

Zhao completed her bachelor’s degree in music at Ocean University of China. Her love of the viola led her to Qingdao University, where she earned her first master’s degree in music.

Connected with the local music community

Zhao is active on campus at Missouri State. As a member of the symphony orchestra, she shares her love and talent in music with audiences at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

Her involvement in Missouri State’s program also led to her being “on-call” with the Springfield symphony orchestra.

For Zhao, music isn’t only practicing. She believes musicians must understand the background and story of the piece you’re playing so you can tell that story to your audience through your instrument.

Outside of music, Zhao is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society. She also works to help other international students as a member of the English language institute special programs' student staff
