Business Education

Degree requirements

Candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Education degree must meet the following grade point average requirements. All GPA requirements include both Missouri State and transfer grades.

1. at least a 3.00 GPA in the certificate subject area (major field of study), which includes all courses listed under 2.
2. at least a 3.00 GPA in any additional certificate subject area
3. at least a 3.00 GPA in the professional education courses and no grade lower than a "B" in all professional education courses, which includes all courses listed under 3.

Additionally, students must earn a composite score or superscore of 20 or higher on the ACT, or earn passing scores on all four sub-tests of the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA) and successfully complete the other Missouri Educator Gateway Assessments (MEGA) as established by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MoDESE).

All students must be admitted to Teacher Education and have successfully completed Supervised Teaching to earn this degree. Refer to Teacher Education for application procedures.

Note: Bachelor of Science in Education majors cannot count more than 30 hours of business courses (25 percent of the 123 hours required for graduation) toward the degree. All exceptions must have the written approval of the Dean of the College of Business. Students found to be in violation of this policy will be dropped from all courses exceeding the maximum number of business course hours.

Program requirements

1. Specific courses required for major and/or certification which may be used to satisfy General Education Requirements:
   1. First-year Seminar (2 hours). GEP 101(2). Note: UHC 110 required for Honors College students, and EDC 150(0) is required for transfer students.
   2. Focus on Written Communication (6 hours): ENG 110(3) and ENG 210(3).
   3. Focus on Quantitative Literacy (3 hours): grade of "C" or better in MTH 134(3).
   4. Focus on Oral Communication (3 hours): COM 115(3) or have a transfer course transcripted as GEC 103.
   5. Focus on Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 hours): ECO 155 and PSY 121(3).
   6. Focus on Constitution of U.S. and Missouri and American History and Institutions (6 hours): HST 121(3) or 122(3); and PLS 101(3).
   7. Focus on Public Issues (3 hours): ITC 200.
2. Business Content (33 hours). Specific courses required to meet Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MoDESE) Business Content requirements: ACC 201(3), ACC 211(3), ECO 155(3), ECO 165(3), EDT 545(3), ITC 200(3), ITC 201(3), LAW 231(3), MGT 286(3), MGT 340(3), MKT 350(3).
3. Professional Education (51 hours): Note: A grade of "B" or better in each course is required.
   1. Foundations of Teaching (18 hours): EDC 345(3), EDC 350(3), EDT 365(3), EDT 520(1), PSY 360(3), SFR 486(3), SPE 340(2).
   2. Literacy Methods (6 hours): LTC 474(3), LTC 574(3).
   3. Content Area Methods and Career and Technical Education Courses (9 hours): EDT 560(3), SEC 526(3), SEC 527(3).
   4. Clinical Experiences (18 hours): SEC 302(3), SEC 439(3), SEC 493(6), SEC 494(6).
4. Public Affairs Capstone Experience will be fulfilled by completion of SEC 493(6) and 494(6).
5. This program also requires compliance with Teacher Education for eligibility to enroll in Professional Education courses; admission to and continuance in Teacher Education; approval for supervised teaching; and recommendation for certification.
