Upper-level requirements

You need 121 or more credit hours to earn a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics. At least 40 of the 121 hours must be upper-level (300 or higher) courses.

Accreditation

The Nutrition and Dietetics program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2190, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, 800-877-1600 ext. 5400. Graduates who meet the requirements for a Verification Statement are eligible to apply for a ACEND-accredited Dietetics Internship and, following its successful completion, to take the national registration examination to become credentialed as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Requirements for Verification Statement of Completion of Didactic Program in Dietetics

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.90 with a grade of "C" or higher in all courses associated with program requirements.

Admission requirements

  1. Completion of at least 45 hours.
  2. DTN 240, DTN 305; BMS 308; CHM 116 and 117 or ( CHM 160, 161, 170 and 171) with grades of "C" or better in each of the courses.
  3. A Missouri State GPA of at least 2.90; and a combined (Missouri State and transfer) GPA of at least 2.90. Exception to the minimum GPA may be made in unusual circumstances.
  4. Provide a signed copy of the Dietetics Honor Code.

Major requirements (78 hours)

  1. Specific General Education requirements (14 hours double count): BMS 110(3) and 111(1); CHM 116(4) and 117(1); ENG 321(3); MTH 134(3) or 136(5) or 137(3) or 138(5) or 261(5) or 287(3); PSY 121(3).
  2. Dietetics and Nutrition courses: DTN 240(3), 305(1), 306(1), 330(2), 331(3), 332(3), 333(3), 335(3), 340(2), 345(3), 430(3), 437(3), 445(3), 532(3), 536(4), 538(3), 539(1), 546(4), 550(2), 595(1).
  3. Biomedical Science courses: BMS 110(3), 111(1), 230(3), 307(4), 308(4).
  4. Public Affairs Capstone Experience will be fulfilled by completion of DTN 345(3).
  5. Related requirements: BIO 212(2) and 213(1); CHM 201(3); CHM 352(3); MTH 340(3) or 545(3) or PSY 200(3) or QBA 237(3) or SOC 220(3).

After your graduate: Verification statement, internship and exam

When you complete your degree, the program director issues you a verification statement.

The verification statement shows you have completed all course work for a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).

To become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), there are a few more steps.

Completing your internship

First, you’ll need to complete an accredited dietetic internship.

Your verification statement makes you eligible to apply for this internship.

You must hold a GPA of 2.9 or higher in order to remain eligible for the verification statement and your internship.

Final step: Registration exam

You’ve completed your degree and internship.

Now, it’s time to take the registration exam for dietitians.

If you pass the registration exam, you’ll become an RDN.

Coming soon: Graduate degree requirement

Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a graduate degree (master's degree or higher) to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).

In order to be approved for the registration examination eligibility with a bachelor’s degree, you must meet all eligibility requirements and be submitted into CDR’s Registration Eligibility Processing System (REPS) before midnight on December 31, 2023.

In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice. For more information, review CDR’s state licensure requirements.

Students with prior degree seeking verification statement

In order to receive a verification statement from Missouri State, students not seeking a second degree must:

  • Complete at least 18 hours of upper-level dietetics courses at Missouri State, including DTN 532, DTN 536, and DTN 546.
  • Must have completed a minimum of a 300-level anatomy and physiology course(s) within the past five years.
  • Maintain a cumulative and institutional GPA of 2.9 or above.
  • Must have a “C” or better in all courses required.
  • Must meet courses and course requirements necessary to accomplish all Knowledge Requirements for Dietitians (KRDs; as required by ACEND Accreditation Standards), which is determined by transcript review and meeting with the program director.

You may be asked to refresh skills, meet recent education requirements, or show competence at the level to which you’re re-entering.

Meet with our program director; they’ll review any courses you have completed at your previous university.

Returning students

It’s our policy that you meet all Knowledge Requirements for Dietitians (KRDs) as set in the 2022 ACEND Accreditation Standards.

You may have to retake program-required courses if you completed the course more than five years ago.

Professional work and/or graduate work in closely related fields may meet some requirements for courses.
