GENERAL FUNCTION

The Open Course Coordinator is responsible for providing direction for the planning, development, implementation, and administration of courses offered in a public arena including iCourses and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The Open Course Coordinator works with faculty, academic departments, and colleges to begin the production process in coordination with the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL), digital media production staff, and MS Online in support the long-range plan. The Open Course Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of open course delivery, including development of proposals, contractual agreements, copyright provisions, the production schedule, building the course according to partner standards (LMS/iTunes), designing and implementing marketing and promotion strategies, and ensuring content is accessible. The Open Course Coordinator monitors and supports classes as defined by course pedagogy, assists faculty with responding to questions and concerns, and provides an overall positive experience for participating faculty and students. The Open Course Coordinator supports students taking open courses for credit by scheduling exams, scheduling and oversight of proctored alternate exams for students, and providing administrative support for students and faculty. The Open Course Coordinator collaborates with departments to identify graduate assistants and per course faculty to support the delivery of courses and provides graduate assistant supervision as defined by the course proposal.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience: K-12 teaching or similar teaching experience is required. Experience with online courses is required.

Skills: Required skills include excellent oral and written communications skills, interpersonal skills, project management and organizational skills, comprehensive technology skills (including learning management systems, iTunes, streaming video, and various devices that users may employ), and troubleshooting ability. Knowledge of media production is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Preferred skills include promotion and public relations skills and more specialized computer skills including competency in the use of the internet and the use of presentation software such as PowerPoint.

Other: The scope of the position requires some evening and weekend work to oversee the open course program including the introduction of classes, testing of students as well as performing student support activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversees the Open Course program by providing direction for the development, expansion, and administration of the program.

2. Manages the growth, development, implementation, promotion, and administration of open courses including: preparing administrative guidelines, presenting course proposals, planning and overseeing the production of new courses, coordinating contracts for new programming, recommending policy and procedural changes, and coordinating with academic departments at the University.

3. Works cooperatively with the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, digital media production staff, and MS Online to coordinate course development and design and facilitate student access to courses through a variety of venues, including iTunes U, designated Learning Management Systems, and CD-ROM sets available in the Bookstore, DVD sets at the Library, and off-campus sites.

4. Provides oversight and monitoring of courses throughout the instructional period by responding to student and faculty issues, adjusting delivery as warranted based on participant feedback and faculty requests, communicating with partners delivering the courses, coordinating with graduate assistants supporting course content management, implementing course assessments, and providing support for program delivery.

5. Prepares credentials for department approval, maintains records of per course faculty teaching through Outreach, prepares course trend analysis, conducts data analysis, and disseminates information.

6. Contributes to the achievement of the University’s recruitment and retention goals by assisting with the dissemination of University information to prospective students and students enrolled in distance deliveries and works collaboratively to achieve distance education and alternative pathways initiatives.

7. Works cooperatively with Outreach Marketing staff to develop and implement effective recruitment and marketing strategies related to the Open Course program, including preparation of publications and participation in community outreach.

8. As assigned by the Associate Provost for Access and Outreach, works with other units of Missouri State University to meet the needs of prospective students and to personally assist enrolled students.

9. Oversees the administration of the budget and prepares faculty and department/college compensation arrangements.

10. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

11. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development seminars, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Associate Provost for Access and Outreach.

12. Supports the overall success of Missouri State Outreach by performing all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Open Course Coordinator is supervised by the Associate Provost for Access and Outreach.
