GENERAL FUNCTION

The Director of Special Projects and Editor, e-Journal of Public Affairs investigates, implements, and coordinates a variety of projects related to public affairs. As editor of the e-Journal of Public Affairs, the Director oversees the processes, resources, and activities related to the development and operations of the e-Journal.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree is required, preferably in a discipline closely related to the job responsibilities described below.

Experience: Three years of experience in project management is required. Two years of experience in higher education with expertise in communicating and working effectively with University faculty and staff is required. Experience with scholarly publications and in networking with academic and community activities related to public affairs. Knowledge of best practices to enhance teaching and learning and integrating civic engagement through academic applications is preferred.

Skills: The ability to manage multiple projects is required. Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills are required. The ability to solve problems and to think critically and independently in order to organize and complete the work assigned is required. The ability to set goals, prioritize tasks, and identify necessary resources required to complete assignments in a timely manner is required. The ability to work collaboratively with staff and faculty is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Effort: The ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to forty-five pounds is required.

Other: Occasional out-of-town travel and some evening and weekend work may be required to engage in professional development, scholarly activities, and editorial board meetings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Manages a variety of special projects as assigned by the Associate Provost of Student Development and Public Affairs, particularly on- and off-campus projects related to the public affairs mission.

2. Develops, oversees, and manages media-based projects as assigned, managing staff assigned to projects, and ensuring project tasks are completed within deadlines.

3. Organizes and manages the development of the e-Journal, establishes and chairs the editorial board and conducts meetings, coordinates processes such as the call for submissions, call for reviewers, and the process used by reviewers, and develops documents and forms.

4. Plans and designs the website, logo, and other e-Journal materials, maintains and supports the website, and manages publication operations ensuring scholarly integrity and fulfilling expectations of the editorial board.

5. Ensures publication of a comprehensive and professional e-Journal under the auspices of established guidelines by assigning reviewers based on expertise and availability, communicating with authors at the completion of the editing process, and collating and editing the e-Journal of Public Affairs.

6. Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job duties and continues professional development including attending and presenting at regional and national conferences.

7. Fulfills scholarly faculty activities as assigned in teaching, research, and service.

8. Contributes to the effective functioning of the unit by performing all other duties as assigned by the Associate Provost, Student Development and Public Affairs.

The Director, Special Projects and Editor, e-Journal is supervised by the Associate Provost, Student Development and Public Affairs.
