Bernie Snodgrass, Taylor Health Center, made a presentation on the changes in faculty and staff benefits and the cost savings made possible by using the Taylor Health Center for medical treatment and prescriptions (see Taylor Health Center).
Initiatives for Distinctiveness: Recap of the new charge given to the college budget committees by the Executive Budget committee (see Presidential Updates Blog). They have the opportunity to identify, and selectively invest in, those academic programs that make each college and the University distinctive. The Executive Budget Committee believes we must seize this opportunity and commit to Decisions for Distinctiveness.
They are asking the college budget committees to complete three tasks:
- Identify the programs/activities that will make the college distinctive. Ideally the areas identified should emphasize student success and learning, faculty excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. These initiatives should be consistent with the new strategic plan of the University. Note that it is reasonable to expect more than one potential initiative from each College.
- Using the budget discussions that have taken place within the colleges as a starting point, determine the funding necessary to achieve distinctiveness in the areas identified above.
- Recommend how best to reallocate up to 2 percent of the existing college budget to fund the distinctive areas identified. Dr. Cofer intends to make some one-time matching money available to help “jump start” the best initiatives recommended by the college committees.
The Department Heads are asked to discuss this opportunity with their faculty and bring forward ideas and initiatives for which seed money may be helpful. The general opinion, however, is that the amount of on-going budget resources to be set aside should be reserved for reallocation to strengthen the teaching mission of the college.
General Education Reform Process: As the “blue ribbon” committee continues its work, each of the CHPA departments (except CRM and DSS) needs to discuss ways in which their current GE courses and potentially new courses might fit into a reformed program. Pam Sailors, a member of the committee, said that no definite framework for this program is yet in place and members of the committee will be visiting with departments and colleges to gauge interest and ideas. A survey is planned as well.
Roles and Rewards: The Provost is asking that names of interested faculty be put forward to form a university committee to discuss possible changes or shifts in faculty workload. For the present, the Heads are asked to discuss with their faculty general propositions such as: “What is the work of the department?”; “What courses are necessary to complete the teaching mission of the department?”; “How should productive faculty be incentivized in a period without pay raises?”
I-Tunes: Heads are asked to speak with their faculty teaching I-tunes courses and solicit feedback on their experiences, the range of students (age, class rank, on-campus, off-campus), and methods for dealing with high DFW rates.
