Department Heads Meeting Minutes
February 7, 2007

- Dean Stone extended a welcome to her new executive assistant, Nadja Gardner.
- Dean Stone will be out of town February 8th – 9th; Associate Dean Matthews will be out of town until February 9th. Beat Kernen will handle any College emergencies.
- Dean Stone will be out of the office Tuesday, February 20th; Associate Dean Matthews will handle any College emergencies.
- It was mentioned that Ken Rutherford informed the Academic Council that the Public Affairs Conference dates have been extended from April 17th through 20th due to the many events that will take place. There are four possible prominent keynote speakers that represent great diversity, any of whom would be excellent once they confirm. This should be a wonderful conference and includes an invitation to high school students. The College wants to encourage students to participate as much as possible, in as many events as possible. A tentative schedule of sessions will be available in the near future.
- Dr. Stone received positive feedback about the All-College meeting last week. Dr. Kernen mentioned that faculty responded that it was very informative and they appreciated it.
- Craig Hulsey (MIL) has volunteered to be the CHPA SOAR advisor this summer. He will need to be briefed on all programs within the College.
- Department Heads were asked to finalize class schedules for Fall, 2007. Each head is required to present their per course needs to the Dean before making employment offers. This list should include per course funded by Continuing Ed as well as by the College. Dr. Sheng mentioned that sometimes they are unsure until the last minute what courses will be needed based on enrollment; Dr. Stone replied to make the best call possible. The plan for per course is due to the Dean by February 21st.
- The Compensation Plan was discussed. Dr. Stone reminded Department Heads of the two ways that composite scores can be determined – (1) on a one year basis, 2006; or (2) on a two year basis, 2005 and 2006, where individual scores for teaching, research, and service are assigned for each year and weights applied, then the composite scores are averaged. It has been determined that Compa ratios will be based on 2006-2007 CUPA average salary by rank and discipline.
- Tenure and Promotion procedures were discussed. Dean Stone asked each Department Head to schedule a meeting with her about their tenure and promotion cases. She reminded Department Heads to follow department guidelines and clearly document every decision. The recommended increases for promotion are $3,500 for promotion to Associate, and $4,500 for promotion to Professor.
- Department Head evaluations for 2006 will be based on three things: (1) faculty input, (2) the annual report for the department, and (3) Dean’s assessment. Dr. Stone gave each Department Head a handout that specified the format of the annual report. The important thing to show is department progress over the year. These Annual Department Reports are due to the Dean by March 1, 2007. The report from the College is due to the Provost by March 23, 2007.
- Dean Stone mentioned the Senate Meeting tomorrow and the appeal of FGB 150.
