African and African American Studies

Why minor in African and African American studies?

Administration of the minor

Courses must be approved by the faculty of the African and African American Studies Committee for inclusion in the minor. It is recommended that AAS 100 be taken prior to all other courses in the minor. A student cannot take more than six hours in a particular discipline (course code) to complete the minor; exceptions must have the permission of the administrator. A student can petition to apply a variable content/special topics course to the minor, with the approval of the administrator. Such variable content/special topics courses might include: AAS 397, AAS 497, ANT 330, or REL 397.


  1. AAS 100(3).
  2. 15 hours from the following areas with at least three hours from each area:
    1. Historical Foundations: HST 331(3), HST 332(3), HST 338(3).
    2. Pan-African Background and Perspectives: ANT 330(3)*, ANT 332(3), ANT 490(3)*, ENG 363(3), GRY 507(3), HST 323(3), HST 335(3), HST 339(3), PLS 550(3).
    3. Arts and Humanities: ART 273(3), ART 486(3), ART 488(3)*, ENG 355(3), ENG 455(3).
    4. Politics and Society: CRM 415(3), HST 334(3), HST 531(3), REL 345(3), SOC 336(3), SWK 219(3).
      *when applicable
  3. Attain a minimum GPA of 2.50 in all courses counted toward the minor.
