GENERAL FUNCTION

The Coordinator of Management Information Systems (MIS) is responsible for application programming activities and supervises the design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance of computer systems which support academic and administrative functions. The incumbent manages the selection, training and evaluation of the management information systems staff, coordinates the introduction of all new computer systems to campus, and assists the Director of Computer Services in the development of short- and long-range plans.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required. A Bachelor’s degree computer-related field is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in systems design of major business systems is required. Demonstrated successful experience managing complex technical projects is required. A minimum of three years of supervisory experience is required. A minimum of one year of project lead experience is required. Work experience in a higher education environment is preferred.

Skills: A thorough understanding of RDBMS, SQL, web development, and technology security issues is required. Must be able to effectively manage multiple, complex information systems projects concurrently. Effective interpersonal, customer service, organizational, and team-building skills are required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proficiency in writing technical specification documents are required. The ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to information processed, stored, or accessed by the systems is required. Strong technical skills and current technical knowledge are required. The ability to work effectively with a variety of constituencies possessing a wide range of technical knowledge is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Other: The twenty-four hour scope of University operations requires this position to be available evenings, nights, and weekends to respond to calls regarding questions or problems with the University’s computing systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ensures the hiring and continued employment of quality personnel by directly or indirectly supervising the selection, training and evaluation of the management information systems staff.

2. Provides for continued growth and improvement of the Computer Services Department by assisting in the development of short- and long-range goals for the department and by evaluating progress toward accomplishment of those goals.

3. Promotes the cohesiveness of the management information systems staff by conducting periodic staff meetings as an opportunity to share experiences, discuss issues and formulate plans.

4. Facilitates user departments obtaining new computer systems or modifications to existing systems by understanding the functions of the user department and analyzing current processing and procedures, advising them on appropriate alternatives to meet their computing needs and assisting them in the preparation of associated requests.

5. Oversees automation of academic and administrative tasks by designing computer information systems which effectively perform those tasks.

6. Ensures the success of new management information systems by coordinating the implementation of all new systems introduced on campus.

7. Effectively resolves complex programming problems by conducting a thorough analysis of the problems and employing strategies for resolution.

8. Promotes the uniformity of the programming effort by contributing to and adhering to the Computer Services departmental standards and guidelines.

9. Promotes the professional development and training of systems analysts by participating in design reviews of new computing systems.

10. Ensures the availability of computer resources by managing recovery from data loss caused by events like power outages, hardware failures, etc.

11. Coordinates the administration, maintenance, and training associated with the mainframe database management system.

12. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

13. Remains competent and current through self-directed reading of professional journals, cultivating professional contacts, attending professional conferences, and attending training and/or courses as required.

14. Contributes to the overall success of Computer Services by performing all other duties as assigned by the Director of Computer Services.

SUPERVISION

The Coordinator of Management Information Systems is supervised by the Director of Computer Services and supervises the Management Information Systems staff.
