Communication Studies

Major requirements (60 hours):

Note: six hours may double count in General Education requirements.

1. Specific General Education requirements: COM 115(3), 260(3).
2. Communication Core (12 hours): COM 205(3), 209(3), 210(3), 350(3).
3. Communication Electives (24 hours) from: COM 206(3), 307(3), 309(3), 315(3), 321(3), 322(3), 325(3), 326(3), 328(3), 332(3), 336(3), 338(3), 360(3), 368(3), 379(3), 390(3), 397(1-3), 405(3), 406(3), 408(3), 410(3), 412(3), 413(3), 423(3), 436(3), 437(3), 439(3), 450(3), 452(3), 454(3), 459(3), 466(3), 468(3), 469(3), 479(3), 494(3)*, 495(3)*, 496(3)*, 509(3), 521(3), 597(3).
4. Secondary Area of Study (18 hours): Because of the diverse, fluid, and rapidly changing character of our networked era demands unprecedented flexibility in educational opportunities for students, students may select upper-division courses that best support their goals in consultation with an advisor. These 18 hours may be in satisfaction of Plan A or Plan B.
   1. Plan A: A concentration of at least 18 upper-division hours in a single area of study outside the discipline of communication.
   2. Plan B: A coherent combination of at least 18 upper-division hours in no more than three areas of study. No more than 9 hours of communication courses may be used to satisfy Plan B.
5. Public Affairs Capstone Experience: COM 322(3) or COM 350(3) or COM 495(3).
6. No course may be used to satisfy more than one requirement within the Communication Studies major.
7. Note: students majoring in Communication Studies cannot complete a minor administered within the Department of Communication, Media, Journalism and Film.
   
   * May count up to a combined six hours of COM 494, 495, or 496 toward the Communication Electives.
