Description

The LGBTQ+ Safe Zone Program (“Safe Zone”) is an awareness and practical-skills certification program for educators and administrators working with LGBTQ+ and queer-identified individuals.

Consisting of multiple modules of increasing content complexity and participant involvement, this program covers topics including: intersections of LGBTQ+ identities with race, socioeconomic position, nationality, religion, and others as well as practical skills for developing interpersonal relationships and social advancement for LGBTQ+ persons.

Mission

LGBTQ+ Safe Zone seeks to build a more LGBTQ+-inclusive Missouri State University by offering a program that effectively advances participants’ state of knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community from “limited knowledge,” to “general knowledge,” to “practical skillsets,” to “queer-inclusive praxis.”

Vision

LGBTQ+ Safe Zone will be an HR-sponsored Learning & Development program for faculty & staff seeking continuing education regarding interpersonal engagement and institutional-experience enrichment skills in relation to LGBTQ+ and queer-identified students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Missouri State University.

LGBTQ+ Safe Zone will be a semester-long, course-style program comprised of progressively problem-centered curriculum providing expanded understanding of intersectional identity experiences, advanced-level advocacy, strategic planning and research, and involvement Modules from external stakeholders and presenters.
