User channels are merely the content and public profile attached to your user account. The video in the center is a spotlighted video, to the right are menus with uploads by the account, videos marked as favorites by this account, and the account's playlists.
Beneath the video content is a public profile with some information about the user or account. In the case of a University unit, this can help convey some rudimentary information to direct interested users to more resources, such as your web site or another social media account. There is also a Wall with a record of recent activity, links to other related channels, and an area for public comments.
