Dreamweaver 8 and WebDAV

Note: You must be running Dreamweaver 8 in order to follow these instructions.

To edit your site with Dreamweaver with WebDAV, you need to do some initial setup steps on each computer. Once the initial setup is complete, you can follow the editing steps each time you need to update your web site.

Initial Setup - Windows Dreamweaver 8

  1. Open Dreamweaver.
  2. Select Site then New Site.
    The Site Definition window opens.
  3. Enter the name of your site and select a local folder where you’d like to store the web site on your computer. This is where you’ll be able to edit files before uploading back to your web site. We recommend you store the site in a new folder within your My Web Sites folder:
    1. Click the folder icon.
    2. Select My Documents then open the My Web Sites folder.
    3. Click the New Folder button, enter the name of your site and click OK.
    4. Double-click the new folder to open and the click the Select button.
  4. Select the Remote Info option from the Category list. Select WebDAV In the Access drop-down box. Enter your site’s WebDav address in the URL text box. Make sure the URL begins with https://. Enter your BearPass login and domain (e.g. abc12@sgf) in the Login text box and your password in the Password text box. Mark the Maintain synchronization information option. Click the OK button.
    The window closes.
  5. Make sure the Files panel group is open. Select the site you'd like to edit from the drop-down box. Click the Get File(s) icon (green down arrow).

Initial Setup - Mac Dreamweaver 8

  1. Open Dreamweaver.
  2. Select Site then New Site.
    The Site Definition window opens.
  3. Enter a name for your web site. Enter the web address (URL) of your web site. Click the Next button.
  4. Select the No, I do not want to use a server technology option. Click the Next button.
  5. Select the Edit local copies on my machine, then upload to the server when ready option. Click the Next button.
  6. Select WebDAV In the How do you connect to your remote server drop-down box. Enter your site’s WebDav address in the URL text box. Make sure that the URL begins with https://. Enter your BearPass login and domain (e.g. abc12@sgf) in the Login text box and your password in the Password text box. Mark the Maintain synchronization information option. Click the Next button.
  7. Select a check-in/check-out option. Click the Next button.
  8. Click the Done button.
    The window closes.
  9. Make sure the Files panel group is open. Select the site you'd like to edit from the drop-down box. Click the Get File(s) icon (green down arrow).

Editing

  1. Open Dreamweaver.
  2. We recommend you synchronize all of the pages from the web server each time you make edits, which ensures that you have the latest version of the files. To do these, complete this steps:
    1. Make sure the Files panel group is open. Select the site you'd like to edit from the drop-down box. Right click anywhere in the file list and click Synchronize. The Synchronize Files window opens.
    2. Select Entire 'site name' site in the Synchronize drop-down box, and select Get newer files from remote in the Direction drop-down box. Click the Preview button.
      The window closes, and a new window opens showing dreamweaver comparing the server files to your local files. Then the window closes and the Synchronize window opens.
    3. The Synchronize window shows all the pages that need to be downloaded. Click the OK button.
      The window closes, and a new window opens showing dreamweaver downloading newly changed files to your computer. The window closes and the Background File Activity - site name window opens.
    4. Click the Close button.
      Your file synchronization is complete.
  3. Update and create new pages.
  4. When you’re finished making updates, you need to publish (synchronize) those files to the web server to make them live:
    1. Make sure the Files panel group is open. Select the site you'd like to edit from the drop-down box. Right click anywhere in the file list and click Synchronize. The Synchronize Files window opens.
    2. Select Entire 'site name' site in the Synchronize drop-down box, and select Get newer files from remote in the Direction drop-down box. Click the Preview button.
      The window closes, and a new window opens showing dreamweaver comparing the server files to your local files. Then the window closes and the Synchronize window opens.
    3. The Synchronize window shows all the pages that need to be downloaded. Click the OK button.
      The window closes, and a new window opens showing dreamweaver downloading newly changed files to your computer. The window closes and the Background File Activity - site name window opens.
    4. Click the Close button.
      Your file synchronization is complete.
