INTO THE STREETS

Into the Streets is an annual program offering hundreds of Missouri State University students to go into the Springfield community and help out at local agencies, non-profits, and other places of need. Through this program, students will learn about a non-profit agency, find out ways to continue to be involved, and help serve the community.
What is a better way to spend a weekend than making friends, volunteering, and making a difference in the lives of others?

2012 Service Site Options
For majority of these sites you will be expected to arrive at the Plaster Student Union at 8:00am and service will conclude by noon. Some sites my start later, you will be notified of your official start time before the event. Some sites also have an afternoon option.
YMCA – DIRT Project
This would work with a schoolyard garden program. In the last 2 years they have installed 9 school gardens, and are teaching at those schools once a week in the garden as an extension of their classroom, incorporating science, math, art, agriculture, and health. Service would include assisting with basic maintenance needs such as weeding, small repairs on raised beds, weed eating, organizing sheds, moving compost, etc.
Habitat for Humanity – Restore (8am-12pm & 1pm -5pm)
The Restore is the location where many goods that are taken from demolished houses are sold to assist with the development of new houses. Duties would include helping with organizing, merchandizing, and sorting of goods that have been brought in. Further help may be needed with putting together desks, repairing broken items and damaged goods.
Habitat for Humanity – Construction (8am-12pm & 1pm -5pm)
Habitat for Humanity is an organization that assists with getting individuals into new houses that may not have adequate living or be able to afford a new house. Construction on these houses requires significant volunteers. Often the family members who are moving in will be on the job site, since they spend much of their time helping to raise funds and assisting with construction.
This site has two service options, a morning shift and an afternoon shift. If you sign up for the afternoon shift you would not need to arrive at the PSU until noon
Pregnancy Care Center
The Pregnancy Care Center helps with individuals who are pregnant or expecting a baby with tools and assistance. Many individuals are unprepared for parenthood and seek out resources here. Service will be assisting with the preparation for a 5K run/walk that will be taking place at a later date.
Regional Girls Home
This is a residential treatment service for girls. This program provides safety, structure, and therapy to girls lives. There are three houses located on 14 acres where children require specialized services and receive intensive individualized treatment. Service for this organization will include some upkeep of the property.
Springfield Urban Agriculture Coalition
This site is working with a garden at Jarrett Middle School where students will be helping with garden maintenance, pulling weeds, filling compost, etc. This helps with the education for middle school students on healthy eating and growing techniques.

Springfield Animal Advocacy Foundation
SAFF is a group of individuals formed in 2007 to focus on local animal welfare and discuss ways to collaborate with Springfield-Green County Animal Control to address welfare issues. They do spay/neuter clinics, and provide services as the lowest cost possible. Help is needed cleaning their clinic and maintaining space.
Community Partnerships - Medicine Collection (9am -12pm & 12pm 3-pm)
Many individuals toss unwanted medication into our waste water systems. This tossing of medicine causes many problems for those who drink water or obtain water from public drinking sources (including some bottled water). Assistance is needed to help with a medicine collection drive. Volunteers will be placed at various parts of town to assist with the collections.

Library District – Brentwood
The library needs help with the maintenance and upkeep of their facility. Many of the aspects of the library that requires help and assistance is done through volunteer labor and work.

Victory Mission – Victory Square
Victory Mission is an organization that provides support to those in poverty, homeless, and hungry. Through a strong set of outreach programs they not only meet the basic needs of individuals but work to assist individuals in regaining their basic needs and establishing patterns of success in life. Service here will include some exterior painting and lawn mowing to assist with the upkeep of the facility.

Victory Mission is an organization that provides support to those in poverty, homeless, and hungry. Service here will include sorting/organizing merchandise and cleaning in the stock room
Harmony House
This is a organization that provides shelter, advocacy, and education to those affected by domestic violence. Service here will include cleaning and straightening up three buildings that are commonly used to support individuals.
C.A.R.E. Animal Rescue

Ozarks Food Harvest
Providing relief food services for much of the Ozarks, Ozarks Food Harvest is having a large packaging and sorting day of food that we will be helping with. Strong hands to move the boxes are encouraged to sign up!
Friends of the Garden – Botanical Center
Friends of the Garden is a group that keeps Springfield looking good and promoting gardening techniques and educational opportunities. At Close Memorial Park we will be planning a new Mosaic Garden with perennials, small trees, shrubs, bulbs, etc
Voter Registration Drive
With the upcoming election, we want to get people out to VOTE! Sign up for this, and we will get you into the streets to help with a voter registration drive. Your site leader will handle all the questions and get you set up to go, so you won’t feel uncomfortable, but people skills are needed!
