Veteran Appreciation Week Events

Military Carnival and Celebration

Monday November 5th, 2012     11:00am - 3:00pm   North Mall

Join us in a celebrate of the Armed Forces with military themed games, activities, food and fun! This event is the first in week long salute intended to celebrate and honor the contributions of our U.S. veterans, particularly the over 650 student veterans attending classes at Missouri State.

Col. (retired) Scott McChrystal will give an opening speech at 11:00am to kick off our week. Chairs will be set up on the North Mall for audience members.

Fireside Chats

Tuesday November 6th   4:00pm-6:00pm  Plaster Student Union Theatre

Veteran presenters from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq will share stories of life in the military and in combat. Generational differences and the camaraderie that binds these individuals together will be explored. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to ask questions of this unique panel of servicemembers. Limited refreshments will be provided.

ROTC Day

Wednesday November 7th, 2012     11:00am - 3:00pm   North Mall
Veterans vs. ROTC "Warrior Champion" Rope-pull competition at Noon

The MSU Army ROTC Bear Battalion celebrated its 60th anniversary on-campus this year and consists of student cadets from six affiliate universities and colleges. They will partner with the local Armory to provide demonstrations and events which showcase what it means to be "Army Strong".

Veteran Student Services will host the first annual Warrior Champion rope-pull competition between ROTC cadets and student-veterans. The winners will proudly display a trophy in their office for one year and maintain bragging rights until the next annual event.

Military Trivia Night

Thursday November 7th, 2012     7:00pm-9:00pm   Plaster Student Union Food Court

Participants will join teams and compete for prizes during a 6-round military trivia challenge. Those who are victorious will prove their knowledge in a series of military-themed rounds. Refreshments will be provided.

Missouri State Salutes the US Air Force

Friday November 9th, 2012     8:00am - 11:10am   Plaster Student Union and North Mall (download Veterans Day flyer)

8:00 - 9:45 AM - Veterans Recognition Breakfast in PSU West Ballroom. We will have a speaker from Whiteman Air Force Base. Please call (417) 836-5636, MSU Career Center, or log on http://alliance.missouristate.edu to reserve seats by 5 November. Breakfast is free to all veterans and their guests.

10:00-10:30 AM - Missouri State’s Canteen- Sarah Margaret Smith, singer/songwriter, will perform a mix of patriotic, original and cover songs with accompaniment of acoustical guitar in PSU’s north food court.

10:40 - 11:10 AM - MSU Taps Project- On the Bear Paw opposite the Bronze Bear at the north door of PSU,
a mass trumpet performance occurs, after which trumpeters and escorts fan out across MSU campus to
perform “Taps” starting at the Bear. The campus and community are asked to pause for a moment to listen
and to reflect on those who have sacrificed everything in public service.

Join us as we honor and pay respect to all Veterans with a parade on November 10, 2012 at 10:00 am in downtown Springfield Missouri. Southwest Missouri is the Heart of the Ozarks and we are continuing our decades old tradition of honoring our Veterans

 

Missouri State Band and Choirs present "A Musical Salute to Veterans" Concert

Each year the Missouri State University Band and Choirs honor Veterans of every generation with a Musical Salute concert. This is a unique chance to experience the talent and commitment of our MSU Music Department at no cost to the community.
