The Oreen Ruedi Scholarship:
The School of Social Work announces the Oreen Ruedi Scholarship to be awarded each Spring semester. There will be one scholarship awarded during the each academic year in the amount of $1000.00. Oreen Ruedi was the first faculty member in the original Sociology Department to teach social work courses and is, therefore, at least partially responsible for having the BSW degree at Missouri State University.
Eligibility Criteria: All applicants must meet all the following criteria:
- Must be a junior or senior level social work student who has been fully admitted (Advanced Progression) admitted to the BSW Program.
- Must have a minimum GPA of 3.25.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to the social work profession and its primary mission of serving disadvantaged and oppressed persons by one or more of the following:
- Regularly participates in or takes a leadership role in the BSW Social Work Club.
- Regularly participates in professional organizations, e.g., NASW, MASW, SMASS or other groups serving disadvantaged and oppressed persons.
- Have a sustained and current record of community/volunteer service to disadvantaged populations.
- Must demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship.
Application Packet: Each applicant must submit all the following materials:
- A copy of your current transcript from the Missouri State "My Information" to confirm your GPA
- Two letters of reference
- From a Missouri State University School of Social Work faculty member who addresses the applicant's
(a) academic abilities and performance in the classroom;
(b) critical thinking abilities; and
(c) commitment to the social work profession and social justice. - From a supervisor or colleague in a volunteer, professional or employment (social service employment) setting that addresses the applicant's
(a) commitment to disadvantaged persons and to social justice;
(b) skills and work habits that demonstrate empathy for disadvantaged persons; and
(c) other skills, abilities and qualities that demonstrate the applicant’s potential for effective service and leadership in the social work profession.
- From a Missouri State University School of Social Work faculty member who addresses the applicant's
- An essay that does not exceed 1,000 words in length (typed, double-spaced, with reasonable margins) that addresses the following items:
- In your own words, define social justice and describe an incident in your life where you have addressed an issue of social justice.
- What are your personal and professional goals and how do they address social justice issues?
- What major contribution do you hope/plan to make in the field of social work?
- Two paragraphs in which you describe your need for the Oreen Ruedi Scholarship. Please type and double-space these two paragraphs.
Due Date: March 1, 2011, by 5:00 p.m. in the School of Social Work Office (PUMM 301 A). All materials must be submitted by the applicant in one package.

The BSW Social Work Scholarship General Fund:
The School of Social Work offers the BSW Social Work Scholarship General Fund to be awarded each Spring semester. There will be one scholarship awarded each academic year in the amount of $500.00. The fund was established by gifts from alumni and friends in response to the phone campaign and other annual solicitations.
Eligibility Criteria: All applicants must meet all the following criteria:
- The recipient of this award will be an undergraduate student at the sophomore level or higher properly enrolled in Missouri State University who has declared a major in Social Work.
- Recipient must be enrolled in a least 12 hours each semester and have cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on all academic work.
- Award will be made without regard for financial need.
Application Packet: Each applicant must submit all the following materials:
- A copy of your current transcript from the Missouri State "My Information" to confirm your GPA
- An essay that does not exceed 500 words in length (typed, double-spaced) that addresses the following items:
- What are your personal and professional goals?
- What major contribution do you hope/plan to make in the field of social work?
- Two paragraphs in which you describe your need for the scholarship.

General Scholarships:
- Gates Millennium Scholars The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education.
- Benjamin A. Gilman Awards to undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
- Wal-Mart Wal-Mart offers several scholarships to demonstrate their commitment to diversity and education.

- Jackie Robinson Foundation The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) is a public, not-for-profit national organization founded by Rachel Robinson in 1973. Serving as an advocate for young people with the greatest need, the Foundation assists increasing numbers of minority youths through the granting of four-year scholarships for higher education.

- United Negro College Fund The nation’s largest, oldest, most successful and most comprehensive minority higher education assistance organization.
Hispanic Scholarships:
- Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Inc. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) was established in 1978 by members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization dedicated to developing the next generation of Latino leaders.
- Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Inc. - The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is the largest Hispanic scholarship-granting organization in the nation.
- MANA, A National Latina Organization A nonprofit, advocacy organization established in 1974. It's mission is to empower Latinas through leadership development, community, service and advocacy. The Coors Primeras Scholarship Program Latina Advancement.
- United States Hispanic Leadership Institute The mission of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) is to fulfill the promises and principles of democracy by empowering minorities and similarly disenfranchised groups and by maximizing civic awareness and participation in the electoral process. Native-American Scholarships:
- Academic Scholarship & Don Leonard Memorial Scholarship - Applicants must be of American Indian heritage and have a 2.5 GPA.
- American Indian Education Foundation - Applicants must be of American Indian or Alaska Native descent.
- Arthur C. Parker Scholarship - Applicant must be an American Indian or Native Hawaiians enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Association of American Indian Affairs Inc. - Allogan Slagle Memorial Scholarship, Displaced Homemaker Program, Emilie Hesemeyer Memorial Scholarship, Florence Young Memorial Scholarship, & Sequoyah Graduate Fellowship
