Brittany Waugh continues to use what she learned about personal branding at Missouri State to build a satisfying and successful career.

Flair for branding helps alumna excel

Brittany Waugh has gained much from her marketing education, including an awareness of her own personal brand. “We all have a personal brand, and every decision we make impacts the message we send others about ourselves. I try to think about what my brand is today, what I want it to be and what steps I need to take to make sure my brand is constantly evolving in the direction I choose.”

As a risk advisor for Ollis & Co., Waugh’s personal brand is very important to her relationships with customers. “I work in our private client department; my main responsibility is designing and implementing risk management plans for new and existing clients of our agency.”

Waugh simplifies this by explaining, “I identify potential clients I can help. In the initial meeting, I hope to determine if they will find value in what I do. If we decide to move forward together, I begin by gathering information to evaluate their unique risks. Some common risks are teen drivers, hiring household employees, serving on a board of directors and not having a home insured to its full replacement value.”

When working with clients, Waugh keeps her marketing education in the back of her mind. “My first thought is about the impression I want to make. I had marketing courses that taught me about professional attire as it relates to my field. I still pay close attention to professional dress; I am stocked with my business cards, my name tag when appropriate, notes from previous meetings and a notebook and pen,” Waugh said.

“When I am leading a meeting, I like to take an agenda. It helps me to organize my thoughts, keep the meeting on track and shows respect for the other attendees’ time. In addition to image and preparation, my marketing education taught me how to give great presentations, communicate effectively and follow up in a way that is personalized and memorable.”

The chance to develop and nurture great relationships has been a surprising benefit of Waugh’s profession. “I love working with my clients and getting to know them. I appreciate the trust they place in me to protect the things that are important to them.”

Besides being a full-time professional, Waugh is also an active member in the Springfield community. She is a member of the Springfield Junior League, President Elect of the Board of Directors of the Ozarks Counseling Center and a member of the Ozark Counseling Center’s Fund Development Committee. Recently, Waugh earned her professional designation as a “Life Underwriting Training Fellow”, was recognized in “The Class of 2013, 20 under 30” by 417 Magazine and was a part of the Leadership Springfield Class of 2013.
