Olivia Kimminau is earning a master's degree, with a graduate certificate in tax accounting, after earning her bachelor's from Missouri State in 2012.
Why I chose Missouri State: I knew it had an excellent accounting program where I would be able to earn my master’s degree shortly after finishing my bachelor’s. The MSU campus is the perfect size — not too big and not too small. I also think Springfield is a great place to live.
Favorite part of being a graduate student at MSU: The people! Everyone is very friendly, and I have made many lifelong friendships through my classes and job as a graduate assistant. This program has encouraged me to get involved with the school and the community by taking on leadership roles in the Accounting Club and Beta Alpha Psi (honors organization for students in some business majors). I have been able to network with professionals and gain valuable advice from those who are currently working in this field.
My favorite course: The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance clinic (known as VITA). I received excellent experience that has prepared me for my career, and it was great to work with individuals in our community and provide them with a much-needed service.
Why Missouri State is a great value: It is one of the least expensive colleges in the state. MSU also offers many scholarships and access to financial aid, and I received a couple of scholarships throughout my time here.
My job after graduation: I will begin my career in public accounting at MarksNelson firm in Kansas City.
How the College of Business has helped me succeed: They go above and beyond. My advisor has been dedicated to helping me plan and complete my degree program, the Career Center assisted me in seeking internships and a full-time job, and the professors have not only been very good instructors but also excellent mentors. I think faculty and staff work hard to ensure that all students will be successful upon leaving MSU.
