After coming to Missouri State to finish his dissertation, Stan Adamson decided to stay when Missouri State developed the risk management and insurance program. "It allowed me professional growth, and I work with a lot of wonderful people. Regardless of what you do, if you don't enjoy the people you work with, it's pretty hard."
For Adamson, the people are one of the best parts of Missouri State. "I think any organization, institution or business ultimately boils down to the people you work with and your mission. Our mission is to develop educated people. We also live in a beautiful area of the country."
Teaching is a subject that is close to his heart. "What's kept me in higher education for all these years is a love of my students and the satisfaction of seeing my students do well, both professional and personally. A great teacher has a passion for the subject matter and cares for his students. You know that saying, 'No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.'"
Adamson also tries to teach his students about the value of risk management concepts. "I'm trying to teach my students to apply risk management in their personal lives, both in finance and other areas," he said. "In a world with few retirement options, students need to take a more active role in managing their future financial security."
Not only is the field of risk management practical on a personal level, but Adamson says that it is a promising career field. "Demand for risk management majors is as great as ever, and growing. More than 50 percent of all the current jobs in the insurance industry will become available within the next decade as many current employees retire. There is a need for high-tech, creative young people in the field."
After working in the industry and teaching about the industry, Adamson also says that the industry has the potential to bring relief to people in distress. "It's important to do something you have a passion for and then be able to get a job doing it. Well, insurance is a great field for people who want to make a difference. We're there to help people when no one else can. Insurance can really make the difference in people's lives when natural disasters or other calamities strike. Our students are in for an exciting and rewarding career!"
