Welcome, faculty and staff of Missouri State University! Do you have an engaged and responsible student in your class? Do you regularly work with a student employee that you believe would represent the University well? Nominate them to become a SOAR leader.
Why should I nominate a student to be a SOAR leader?
There are several reasons why faculty or staff member would want to nominate SOAR leaders.
- These nominations give faculty and staff from across campus the ability to contribute to the SOAR program in an exteremly important way. Selection of high-quality leaders is essential to the success of the program. And consider this--about 40 students will be influencing the entire freshman class. We want those forty to be exceptional!
- While SOAR leaders do not actively recruit for the department of their majors or minors, many freshmen see them as an example of the quality of student your department produces. A SOAR leader from your major may end up recruiting for you!
- Modest students often do not believe they would be good candidates. A push of encouragement from someone who believes in their talents and abilities can help a student develop some very beneficial leadership experience they would not have sought out otherwise.
What qualities are you looking for in SOAR leader candidates?
SOAR leaders should exhibit the following qualities: a high level of integrity and personal responsibility, leadership potential, good problem solving and critical thinking skills, excellent communication skills, positive attitude and work ethic, good academic and disciplinary standing, and a dedication to serving Missouri State University and its incoming students.
It is also important to note that there are no "types" of students that we look for. For example, while many of the SOAR leaders are extroverted, some of our most skilled SOAR leaders are introverts. The SOAR program is dedicated to building a diverse team in which one person's differences in personalities, traits, and experiences complement another member's.
Are there any requirements I should be aware of before I nominate a student?
SOAR leaders do have a minimum set of requirements they must fulfill in order to be offered a position. SOAR leaders must:
- possess and maintain a minimum 2.75 overall GPA for all semesters of employment
- be available to attend all training and orientation sessions for the months of June and July
- be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate for the Fall 2011 semester
- have completed 30 credit hours by the end of the Spring 2011 semester
