For decades, SOAR leaders have helped incoming students make a successful transition to University life and feel welcome at Missouri State. Become a part of this proud tradition by participating in the special interview process we call SOAR Carousel.
SOAR Carousel
SOAR Carousel is a mandatory interview process during which you are exposed to various activities and situations SOAR leaders typically encounter during summer sessions. You must attend Carousel to be considered for a SOAR Leader position.
At Carousel, you and other applicants will be placed into small groups and evaluated on your performance during four different activities:
- An individual interview with a faculty or staff member familiar with the SOAR program
- A mock student/family question and answer panel
- An impromptu public speaking activity
- Icebreaker and group problem solving activity
During Carousel, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and personality to the Carousel evaluation team. While knowledge of Missouri State University, its policies and procedures is looked upon favorably, what we look for most in potential SOAR leaders is the desire to represent the University positively, to assist students and families in making a successful transition, and to work diligently to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere on campus.
SOAR leader application process
To apply to be a SOAR leader, we recommend following the instructions below:
- Attend a SOAR information session
Learn more about the position from SOAR staff, and current and former SOAR leaders. While attendance is not required, an info session helps you get your questions answered. - Complete the SOAR Leader online application by 5 p.m. November 5
- Submit two completed faculty/staff recommendation forms
Recommendations must be completed by a full-time MSU faculty or staff member. Graduate students may complete your reference forms if they directly supervise your work or teach a course in which you are enrolled. Undergraduate students, non-supervisory graduate assistants or off-campus individuals cannot complete recommendations.
It is your responsibility — not the recommender’s — to ensure forms are submitted to the SOAR office by 5 p.m. Monday, November 5. - Attend SOAR Carousel
All SOAR applicants will be assigned to one of two Carousel sessions and notified of their assigned session via their Missouri State email account on the week of November 5. Applicants must attend the assigned Carousel session to be considered for a position as a SOAR leader.
