Juanita K. Hammons Hall Shelter Locations

Missouri State University has a severe weather warning system with exterior sirens.  All sirens are controlled from the Missouri State University Safety and Transportation Department.  In the event the National Weather Service issues an actual TORNADO or DANGEROUS SEVERE WEATHER WARNING, the following procedures will be followed:

Non-Performing Times

  • Reporting
    • Person assigned to monitor the Weather Alert Radio will notify the Executive Director of the Tornado Warning.
    • The Executive Director will notify the Director of Operations.
    • The Director of Operations will be responsible for notifying all back-stage and music department personnel and anyone using the green room or rehearsal hall.
    • The Executive Director will notify administrative office and box office personnel and anyone using the Fuldner Lounge.
  • Taking Shelter
    • Administrative office and box office personnel will take shelter in the coat check room or in the supply room.  Persons in the Fuldner Lounge can take shelter in the rest rooms located just outside the Fuldner Lounge, or the stairway leading to the box seats.

During a Performance

  • Reporting
    •  Person assigned to monitor the Weather Alert Radio will notify the Executive Director of the Tornado Warning.
    • The Executive Director will notify the Director of Operations.
    • The Executive Director will make an announcement from the stage over the PA system and initiate the sheltering procedures.
    • The Director of Operations will be responsible for notifying all backstage personnel, technical crew, performers, music department personnel and anyone using the green room.
    • The house manager will be responsible for directing the head ushers and volunteer ushers in carrying out the sheltering procedures.
  • Taking Shelter
    • If the warning occurs before a performance or at intermission, volunteers will direct patrons to the interior of the theater, orchestra level only, to duck and cover behind any empty seat or along walls, taking care not to block entrances.
    • If the warning occurs during a performance, volunteers will direct patrons to remain at their seat location and duck and cover behind the seat.  During a Tornado Warning there will not be sufficient time to evacuate the mezzanine or petite balconies.  Volunteers will direct patrons to remain in their seat area and duck and cover behind the seat.
    • The head ushers will supervise the sheltering of patrons with disabilities.
    • The Executive Director will decide if the performance will continue as scheduled.
