Bicycle Registration

It is encouraged that all bicycles be registered with the Department of Safety and Transportation at the Substation, located at 636. E. Elm Street.  This free service is provided daily, Monday through Friday.  Registration and marking your bicycle with identifying information will assist the university and law enforcement agencies in recovery of your bicycle if it is stolen.  Engravers may be checked out from Safety and Transportation at the Substation.

• Riding bicycles is restricted to the designated bikeways on campus.

• The bikeways are identified by red-colored concrete and brick outlines, and are marked with a bicycle symbol.  Riders must dismount and walk their bikes on gray pedestrian walkways and give pedestrians the right of way at designated crossings.

Bicycle Paths

For the safety of the University community, safe bicycle paths have been constructed throughout campus.  These routes parallel the gray pedestrian walkways.  Other routes are painted white on the street surface and signed with the international bike route symbol.

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle parking is located throughout the campus along the bicycle paths. You may lock your bicycle only to authorized bicycle racks.

• Locking your bicycle to trees, handrails, signposts, access ramps or other such objects, is not permitted. When locking your bicycle you should secure the frame to the rack.    The best locks to use are the U-shaped style locks such as Citadel or Kryptonite.
• Bicycles are not allowed inside any University academic building.
• Students living in residence halls may secure bicycles in their room.
• Bicycles improperly parked may be impounded by cutting and removing locking devices, if necessary.
• There is a $25.00 fee for releasing a bicycle that has been locked or impounded.
  
  Note: Locking devices may be cut and removed, as necessary, during the impounding process.

Bicycle Safety Tips

Vehicular laws apply to bicyclists as well as drivers of motor vehicles. Safe operation of your bicycle requires that you be aware of all applicable Missouri laws. City of Springfield ordinances and campus rules and regulations. When operating your bicycle on campus, always be respectful of, and yield the right of way to pedestrians, and exercise caution at intersections and cross-walks. When operating your bicycle you should always:

• Use proper hand signals when making a turn or stopping.
• Ride with the flow of traffic.
• Yield to pedestrians.
• Respect areas designated for pedestrians only or as access ramps for the disabled.
• Ride as close to the right side of the bicycle path as is practical. If sharing the lane with automobiles, allow enough room for a car to comfortably pass on your left.
• Wear a helmet.
• Wear brightly colored close-fitting clothes.
• Keep at least one hand on the handlebars.
• Carry identification and change for a phone call in case of an accident/emergency.

Abandoned Bicycles

Bicyclesare considered to be abandoned if not moved for 30 days and will be removed by cutting the locking devices, if necessary and impounded. There is a $25.00 fee for releasing a bicycle that has been impounded. Confiscated bicycles not claimed within 60 days will be disposed of.

The Department of Safety and Transportation welcomes suggestions and comments regarding bicycle safety issues. Concerned students, faculty, and staff should contact the Parking Administration office at 836-4825. Students may also contact the Missouri State University Student Government Association at 836-5500.
