A way to enhance your RSS feeds is by using FeedBurner. FeedBurner is a web feed managment provider, which provides custom RSS feeds and tools to help create additional resources for users who view your feeds. To use FeedBurner, you need to login with a Google account. Keep in mind this should be a shared or community account for your University unit, not a personal email address/account.

In step one, you create a FeedBurner feed by entering the URL for the original feed and following these steps:

  1. Enter the URL in the textbox at FeedBurner under Burn a feed right this instant, and click Next. Be sure to select if you are a podcaster.
  2. If the URL you entered is providing more than one type of feed, be sure to select the one you want to work with (in this case, RSS).
  3. Now that the feed source has been identified, you can create a title and an address for FeedBurner to use with the feed.

Step 2 allows you to decide on additional services and functions. When creating a new FeedBurner feed, the following services are automatically applied:

  • BrowserFriendly improves your feed's appearance in most web browsers and makes it easier to subscribe to.
  • FeedBurner Stats tracks basic feed traffic statistics:
    • Circulation — How many people are subscribed
    • Readership — What feed readers people are using
    • Uncommon Uses — Other services and sites using your feed
    • You have the option to enable Clickthroughs, or how often people click items back to your site, podcast downloads, individual item views and reach for your blog.

Once on the management screen, you can decide to integrate your FeedBurner feed by redirecting and overriding the original feed of your blog to FeedBurner. This will redirect users who are subscribed to your feed to the new, enhanced FeedBurner feed. The links on this page will direct you to Google Help articles that will allow you to work with Blogger, TypePad, WordPress and so forth in order to change your feed.

The tabs at the top of the page allow you to examine the new features applied to your feed:

  • The Analyze tab provides you with statistics on subscribers and viewers.
  • Optimize will help you to create a more browser friendly blog or feed that's more accessable to more users.
  • Publicize offers tools that helps generate traffic to your feed.
  • Monetize gives you choices on configuring and creating ads to generate revenue with your feed.
  • Troubleshootize provides support for the FeedBurner service and feeds.

If you ever want to change or alter the details of your feed, click the Edit Feed Details link under the title of your feed at the top of the page. If you want to transfer managment of the feed to another FeedBurner publisher, click Transfer Feed. Delete Feed gives you options for removing all support and FeedBurner features from your original feed.
