Tutor In Religious Studies

TUTOR/OFFICE WORKER JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Department of Religious Studies

The Department of Religious Studies is seeking an advanced undergraduate student to serve as a tutor for the students in the Department’s general education courses (REL 100, 101, 102, 131, and 210) in 2009-2010. Among other things, the tutor will be responsible for e-mailing the students in all of the sections of those courses, and meeting in person with as many sections as possible, to introduce herself or himself and offer help to any student having problems. The tutor will not be expected to do students’ homework for them, of course, but could help with assignments and offer more general advice concerning issues such as studies skills and time management. The tutor can also assist with problems that are unique to Religious Studies, such as adjusting to viewing religion from an academic rather than a faith perspective.

The tutor will work for ten hours per week at a rate of $8 an hour. The tutor would start working for the department at the beginning of the fall 2009 semester, continuing through the spring semester. The tutor will maintain office hours in the department office, when she or he will be available regularly. Missouri State is planning to set up a university-wide tutoring center in 2009-2010, and the successful applicant for this position may undergo training there. When not busy assisting students, the tutor will be expected to help in the department office (doing tasks such as photocopying, answering the phone, and running errands on campus). An important responsibility of the tutor will be to collect and analyze data on how well the program itself is going. The tutor will be supervised by the Department Head, Jack Llewellyn, and the Department’s administrative secretary, Carolyn Mayer.

The requirements for the position are:

1. The applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student in fall 2009 and spring 2010, with junior or senior standing.

2. The applicant must be a Religious Studies major or minor. The Department would prefer a Religious Studies major.

3. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in Religious Studies courses. The Department would prefer a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 overall as well.

4. The applicant must have had at least four of the Department’s gen ed courses. The Department would prefer all five.

The application procedure is as follows. There is an application form online (click on the Tutor Application link at http://www.missouristate.edu/relst/major.htm). Note that with the application form, the student is required to submit a personal statement of not more than five hundred words. There is more information about the content of this statement included on the application form. The application is due on 20 April 2009. Questions should be directed to Jack Llewellyn at JLlewellyn@MissouriState.edu. If you have so many questions that you’d like to get together to discuss them, please contact Carolyn Mayer (at CMayer@MissouriState.edu) to make an appointment with Dr. Llewellyn.
