The deeper I delve into the history of Christianity, the more fascination the material holds for me. Who were the movers and shakers at different periods of Christian history, what inspired them, and what is their legacy? Who were the ordinary people, what did they hear from the pulpit, and how did they live their faith? In my dissertation, Reforming the Art of Dying: The ars moriendi in the German Reformation (1519-1528), I traced the development of spiritual care to the dying from the Late Middle Ages through the first ten years of the Reformation in Germany. My current project is a survey of the preaching (seven volumes of sermons) of Aegidius Hunnius (1550-1603), professor and pastor in Marburg and Wittenberg, and one of the founders of the post-Reformation movement known as Lutheran Orthodoxy.
