Changing Computer Systems: Important Information for Students Registering for Summer and Fall 2009

The University is in the process of implementing a new administrative computer.  Our current system will be used to register for the summer 2009 semester.  The new system will be used for registration for the fall 2009 semester.  As we make this conversion from one system to the other, here are some things that you need to know to prepare for registration.

Registration will begin on March 6 for the summer semester and April 6 for the fall semester.  Please take advantage of the early registration option and register for summer before April 6.

Registering for the summer semester

Current students

For continuing students, the process for viewing the class schedule, receiving and advisor release, registering for classes, paying the $60 minimum payment, etc. will not change.

New students

If you are a new student, you will need to obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that you will use along with your current student number (for most students, that is the social security number), to access the “My Information” system (www.missouristate.edu/myinformation). You will use this system to view your transcript, transfer evaluation, and degree audit, as well as to check your registration status and register for summer classes.

To obtain a PIN, go to www.missouristate.edu/pickapin.

You will use the “My Information” for the summer semester to:

  • Access your advisement folder, advising notes, and booklist;
  • Change your address and phone;
  • View your financial aid award letter (if you applied for summer aid);
  • Register for classes and add or drop classes;
  • View your account balance for summer; and,
  • Reserve your textbooks.

If you are required to have an advisor release before you register, you will be able to view the status on the registration status page.    We encourage you to make arrangements to confer with your advisor well in advance of your assigned registration time.

When you register for the summer semester, you will need to pay a $60 minimum payment to hold your classes.  At the end of the registration process, you will be given the deadline by which this must be paid.

Your grades for the summer semester will also be posted on “My Information” on August 4.

 Registering for the fall semester

For the fall semester, My Missouri State (My.MissouriState.Edu) will replace the “My Information” system.  My Missouri State will be available to all students by April 1.

  • If you are a current student, you will access My Missouri State with the user ID and password that you now use to access Bearmail.
  • If you are a new or readmitted student, you will be able to create your unique user ID and password from a link on the My Missouri State home page.

Under the new system, you will have a student identification number (known as an M-Number).

  • If you are a current or readmitted student, you can view your M number by going to the My Information system (www.missouristate.edu/myinformation).  (It appears at the top of the screen next to the welcome.)
  • If you are a new student, your M-Number will be sent to you by late March (or following your admission to the University).

When you log on to My Missouri State, you will see the range of functions, services, and resources that you can access with this system, including most of those available for the summer semester through the “My Information” system.

If you are a freshman, sophomore, new transfer student, graduate student, or on academic probation, you will need an advisor release to register.  Your advisor will use the current system to issue your release, and that release will be transferred to the new system.

Beginning with the fall 2009 semester, prerequisites will be enforced at registration (that is, you will not be allowed to register for courses for which you have not met prerequisites).  Be sure that you have met prerequisites for the courses you plan to take.

After you register for the fall semester, you will NOT be required to pay a $60 minimum payment. Instead, when you register, you are confirming your intent to enroll and you will be accountable for tuition and fees.

Please note this important change: If you decide to not attend, you must officially withdraw (drop all your classes) before or during the first week of classes. If you withdraw after that time, you will owe your tuition and fees, even if you do not attend classes.

You can use the My Missouri State system to withdraw.

 Commonly asked questions

When will I find out what my new student number is?

  • If you are a current or readmitted student, you can view your M-Number by going to the My Information system (www.missouristate.edu/myinformation).  (It appears at the top of the screen next to the welcome.)
  • If you are a new student, your M-Number will be sent to you by late March (or following your admission to the University).

One of the benefits of this system is that your social security number will no longer be used as your student number.

How will I get my user ID and password?

  • If you are a current student, you will access My Missouri State with the user ID and password that you now use to access Bearmail.
  • If you are a new or readmitted student, you will be able to create a user ID and password from a link on the My Missouri State home page.  You will be able to do this beginning in late March.

How do I find out when I can register for the fall 2009 semester?

To determine when you are eligible to register for the fall semester, visit the fall 2009 registration sequence page and enter your class and credit hours completed (Missouri State and transfer combined).  If you are a new transfer student, enter the completed credit hours from your transfer credit evaluation.  (Do not include credit hours in which you are currently enrolled, either at MSU or another institution.)

Note:  The new system does not currently have a feature (like the “Registration Status”  page under our current system) that will give the registration time for an individual student.   We anticipate adding such a feature in the future.

How do I find out if I have encumbrances that will prevent me from registering for the fall semester?

When you have access to the new system, you will be able to view your encumbrances (to be known as “holds”) there.  In the meantime, if you are a current student, you can check the “My Information” system for encumbrances.

How will I view the class schedule?

The fall semester schedule of classes will be on the Banner system and will have a different appearance from the summer class schedule; however, you will be able to access both via http://www.missouristate.edu/classschedule.

What are the major differences between registering under the current system and under the new system?

The new system will have a different “look and feel” than the current system.  For example, under the new system, you have the option to register for one course at a time instead of selecting all of your classes before you submit your registration.  Also, the new system does not currently have a trial schedule tool that will display your courses on a calendar.  That is a feature we anticipate adding in the future.

Here are some other differences:

Prerequisites:  This is one of the possible registration errors.  Under the new system, prerequisites will be enforced.  If you do not have the prerequisite for a course, you will not be able to register for the course unless you obtain an override from the department.   Be sure you check the courses for which you are registering and ensure that you have the prerequisites.

Because of this change, it is important that you register for summer 2009 classes during the March summer registration period if classes that you are taking during the summer are prerequisites for classes you will take in the fall.  At the end of summer sequenced registration, we will update the new system with your summer classes.  The new system will also be updated with courses you are taking during the spring semester.  If you are currently enrolled or registered for a course that is a prerequisite for a course you wish to take in the fall, the system will assume that you will pass the course. Requesting permission:  This will also be handled differently under the new system.  If you wish to request permission to enter a course (e.g., if the course has a permission requirement, if you wish to request a prerequisite waiver, or if a course is full), you will need to obtain an override from the instructor or the department.

Course delivery type: When using the class search tool during the registration process, the “results” page does not list the course delivery type (e.g., cable; interactive CD; video rental; other location, such as West Plains, etc.) Therefore, it is important to choose the link to the specific class for which you wish to register and view the detailed information, including the course delivery type. You can also view this information prior to registering for classes by accessing the class schedule.

Fee payment:  Under the new system, the $60 minimum payment will no longer be required.  If you register for courses, you will be obligated to pay fees for the semester unless you withdraw before the semester starts.

Will I need to get a new student identification card?

No.  If you are a new student, however, you will need to obtain one.  Please follow the instructions provided to you following your admission or contact the ZipCard Office in the Plaster Student Union, room 128 (417-836-8409).

What are my financial obligations if I register?

When you register for the fall 2009 semester and future semesters under My Missouri State, you are entering into a financial obligation and will be required to pay tuition and fees for the semester unless you withdraw before or during the first week of classes. If you do not withdraw, you will be obligated to pay tuition and fees even if you do not attend classes.

If you need to withdraw (drop all of your classes), you will be able to do so on My Missouri State.
